2 Wahls

I just got the little ringtop in the mail - an eBay steal. It is to small of a pen for me. But, I had procured an earlier Wahl with the roller clip that I had a Waterman nib in because the supplied nib was missing half the tip.

The #2 Wahl nib in the ringtop is real flexy. I will carry a roller clip pen. The nibs got swapped.

The little ringtop has little or no brassing. There is some discoloration but, it is an 80 year + old pen in all likelihood. http://www.otherpower.com/images/scimages/284/wahls.jpg

Tomorrow morning I'll fill the roller clip with black ink and amuse myself.

Nice flex with the Wahl #2 nib there! Congrats on the nice Ebay find :)

I have a couple of Wahl All-Metal pens (both ringtops) that have other companies' nibs in them---one has a Waterman #2 nib and the other has a Sheaffer's 3-25 nib in it. Both fit perfectly!

Just discovered that I have my mother-in-law's ringtop Wahl pen, which she probably acquired in the 1920's. It is not in great shape, sadly. There is some missing edge below the gold band on the cap, and the ringtop is missing. Besides, the bladder is totally disintigrated. If these pens are available cheaply on Ebay, it is probably not worth while having it repaired. I might consider having the bladder replaced, if that is all that is needed to render it useful. I think the nib is ok. Any suggestions? I wonder why the body has the bulge.

The one I have has a similar 'bulge'. If it were mine I would repair and use. The flexible nibs are incredible.

You may want to resize those pictures. They will take near 5 minutes to load on a dial-up line.

Oops! I am very sorry! I have since resized the images to about 40K and 28. Look much better, I think. Thanks for the encouragement regarding repair.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
