Great review, I have been thinking of getting one and now will do it.

Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell. :W2FPN: Always happy to enable.

I have the Viceroy Pocket in barleycorn motif and it's fantastic, there's something about the way silver warms in your hand over use and I did find mini aerometric converters for mine so I didn't have to rely upon a cartridge. I don't think it runs as long as a cartridge but I would miss certain ink colours too much if I couldn't fill from the bottle. They're fabulous writers.

Remember, you can always refill cartridges.

Remember, you can always refill cartridges.

I refilled the same cartridge 32 times in doing my sepia ink comparison, using a syringe with a blunt needle. I had been worried the cartridge would not clean (it did, very well) or would crack or fall apart (it didn't). First time I've done that extensively and it worked better than I had imagined. Sorry, Jar, to hijack your thread (you are the one, you know, who inspired me to start looking into sterling silver pens - now I have several!), I just thought I'd throw in two cents about the cartridge option.

No problem and always glad to enable.

There are lots of misconceptions about cartridges and one biggie is that there is not much of a selection of colors out there.

J. Herbin has 30 different colors in cartridges.

Private Reserve has over 30 colors in cartridges.

Diamine has over 18 different color cartridges.

Montblanc has 7 regular inks as well as their specialty inks in cartridges.

Waterman has 9 colors.

Pelikan has at least 8 colors.

And that is just some of the ones that are International Standard small sized.

Yep, and I have 150 bottles of ink, a syringe, and some empty cartridges, so that opens the world up even more.

This pen will remain as my one that got away,

had serious inquiry in on one with Pam Braun, when she closed shop.

Hope I'll have the opportunity to testdrive one someday.

Does it only take the wobbly small cartridges? That might make me feel a tad better.

Pretty much just one cartridge but no wobble at all. Some folk say they also can take the small Monteverde converter but I haven't tried that yet.

I have one of these and was surprised upon opening the box how wonderful it is. As said before: it seems to have no flaws.

A wonderful, and highly recommended, pen.

Too many pens; too little writing.

A great review, what nib sizes do they come in, and what nib size did you purchase, and what is the price?

I believe they come in fine, medium and broad nibs, and I have a medium nib on the Viceroy Pocket Victorian. I believe the Pocket Viceroy generally sells for about $350.00 for the Barleycorn finish and $450-500.00 for the Victorian finish.

Thank you for the review - I've been drooling over this pen since I tested it in a London pen shop last year. Seeing the comparison with the other models (and knowing that my current favorite is my TWSBI pocket sealed the deal).

Hubby just got it me as an early birthday present, I'll now be stalking the postman, lol.

The issue I find with the mini converters is that they hold far less ink than a small International Standard cartridge.

Agreed. I just reconcile myself to not being able to use Japanese inks, and enjoy the otherwise huge selection...

Too many pens; too little writing.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
