Parker 51 questions

I'm really worried that, although there don't seem to be any signs of it, these are not authentic. I listed the item on ebay and I got a question from a potential buyer asking me to show him pictures of the hallmarks on all the parts. Well only the cap has any sort of symbol on it. Also he said that "...this looks to be a german overlay,"

I really don't want to get into trouble with ebay, so is there any way to tell if these are real or not? I tried the magnet test, and neither the barrel, clip, or cap of either stick to the magnet, so that can get crossed off the list.

Thanks

Well, your amended description seems to take care of it.

And, I've never heard of a 'German overlay'.

An overlay is normally associated with a hard rubber pen, that then has a decorative layer of metal applied as a separate cylindrical sleeve.

Otherwise my knowledge of all gold or all gold plated 51's is very limited. I don't have the cash to play with such things.

Why would you ever sell a set like this? Put them (safely packed) away for someone in a future generation who will appreciate the pens and make them your family heirloom. Get them off of e-bay pronto.

eBay seems like a pretty sure way to get them to someone who'll appreciate them, and make a nice big pile of cash at the same time.

I'd send the lot off to Daniel Kirchheimer & get the ding taken out of the cap.

Also ask him for an appraisal.

Then keep them :)

It's not a ding. Both the pen and the pencil have it in the same spot. It's some sort of marking...

I'm selling the set because I truly have no use for them, nor do

I see any sentimental value in keeping them. I know whoever buys it will greatly appreciate the set, at least more so than I would.

Thanks

  • 9 years later...

The inside of the cap looks like brass, and if it were made in England it would, I believe, be illegal to mark it as 18 ct without the appropriate stamps (750 in the right shape box, city stamp, year stamp and maker's stamp). Also the 18K is half way missing the band (which I have seen on a genuine Parker before but craftsmen rarely make that mistake). Now, I don't want to be overly negative, but it's a little odd...

Does it say Parker anywhere?

Oh, I'm so sorry. - Somehow my touchpad began overreacting yesterday making it almost impossible for me to do anything without constantly clicking all over the place - and I must somehow I must have gone from the first site in the Parker forum to a very very very old one.

My apologies!

Well, thanks for it anyway. I love to remember some of those posters. God love them.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
