Platinum Blue Black

It's been too long since I posted a review here and I was quite surprised to see I'd never posted a review for this ink given how much I love it.

A close up that better shows the differences in ink colors:

On some 100% cotton ivory colored resume paper:

Drip and soak test:

For the soak test, I held it under the faucet running warm water full blast for 30 seconds. The cobalt-blue element of the ink washes away almost completely and what is left is a color I'd consider more of a blue black. (Go figure.)

In short -- this ink meets my requirements of having a color pleasing to my eye, not causing problems in pens, and being sufficiently resistant to having liquids spilled on it. I use it heavily at work for these reasons, and it's very rare that I don't have a pen inked in this color at home.

I have it, and mine is a blue-black (not as blue as yours) when dry. That's why I dont use it much.

Yes, and to make a paint analogy it's a little more matte than I'd like, but it performs very well and displays a good color.

I use it in winter with the Nakaya, because it is available in bottle when at home, and in cartridges when traveling. It is a nice color.

  • 2 years later...

I've had two bits of paper immersed in a glass of water for more than a week now.
A few words written on them, using Platinum "Blue-Black" and ESS "Registrar's Ink". The paper is just about falling apart by now, the letters are perfectly legible.

Great review of a great ink! This is one of my favorite inks; it's almost always loaded in something or other.

This finding is great. :-)

The paper - a cheap no-name - is practically falling apart now, I dare not touch it and merely changed the water today. ESS "Registrar's Ink" looks quite strong still, Platinum "Blue-Black" is a little more faded ....but I think it was from the beginning.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
