Ordered Twsbi 540

Recommended Posts

I love my 530 and just purchased a 540 in medium. I am thinking about another in broad, but don't know the difference in line sizes. Can anyone post pics of the broad and medium for some perspective?

i hope this is the right spot to ask ...

i don't have a demo style in my collection, and i like the size and price, so was considering ordering a 540.

but, from the photos i have seen, the clip looks a little flimsy. i'd like to be able to put it back in my pocket one handed a la pelikan and the VP, and it be secure. i have found that some thinner, cheaper style clips don't work as smoothly.

one review said that solid brass clips were coming soon.

how is the function of the current clips? wait for the improved model or pull the trigger?

thanks

I don't usually use a clip, because I don't wear shirts with pockets, but I have had to clip my TWSBI to the pocket inside my purse a couple times and it seemed very strong and secure.

Clips on both the 530 and the 540 (mine arrived today) are very sturdy - as someone else said, more sturdy than many more expensive pens. Certainly feels more sturdy than on my MB 149 (not that that clip feels flimsy).

It's here! It's here! My 540 is here!!!!

I tried taking everything apart and then took me an hour to figure out how to get it back together. -____-;; fail.

The clip is nice but a little hard to open and close for me. I tried using it on my jeans and it works nicely. The cap is heavy and nothing about this pen feels flimsy for me.

The only downside is when I was fiddling around with it, the bottom part of the piston came apart and got stuck in the barrel and there was no way to get it out. I had to semi-reassemble everything and twirl the cap until it pushed to bottom part of the piston down and stuck back to the rest of the mechanism. Did that make sense?

Has anyone else had this problem?

You're braver than I am. The last thing I'm going to do when mine arrives is sit down and take it apart. LOL! Now, if there's a problem, yes, and I'll find all the instructional youtube videos, but if it works fine, then I'm not going to break it!

I'm glad you got it back together again. I hope it writes well. It's good to see that they're starting to arrive. :)

Even though it's a M nib it was a little scratchy at first. I wrote on a brown paper bag and now it's all smooth. It write beautifully. :) Now I just need the B and the italics nibs....

One of our members, 777, has a very good video on taking the TWSBI apart and then re-assembling it.

found another post here noting that the 540 has the new brass clip, and saw a photo of it. looks pretty nice, kind of an MB style to my eye.

that was enough to push me over the edge. ordered a 540 in B and an hour or so later got a notice that it had already shipped.

when i wake up tomorrow AM will it be on the doorstep? jk

ordered a 540 in F today from Amazon...... YAY!!

I'd love to see a writing sample if you could do one. I bounce back and forth on whether I like fine or medium nibs better and then, of course, there's the variances between the nib sizes from maker to maker.

I just opened mine. I need to fill it to test that broad nib. :D

If I used a broad nib, I'd never be able to read anything I wrote. Hope you like the pen!

Same here but believe me you get used to it. This is coming from a person that has the 530 in EF and F. :D

I am on the fence about purchasing a 540 since I have three 530's and they all are EF. I have been tempted by the 540 and B nib combo. However, like the previous two posters, I write narrow so a broad nib may not work well for me, I am guessing. Can a kind soul post a writing sample comparison between EF and B nib? TIA

You can always buy a nib unit instead of the whole pen.

That is quite true. But, there is some magical about a big volume of ink of the 540 swishing around for all to see :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
