Assuming the whole thing is M,T&Co (because I don't know the line so well, and that section doesn't quite match the profile of the barrel), the celluloid suggests after 1925, and the USA imprint suggests before 1938.

It's mainly pens, just now....

Oh, good heavens. He's got a blog now, too.

Thank you ernst!; I was going to put a pic of logo on barrel but will try now. I do not know anything about this line myself so was seeking info I appreciate your comments and welcome more of same. I have not had time to make my profile and add a pic i know it seems unfriendly just been busy will rectify that. I love vintage parker ballpoints as my simple everyday pen, not a fountainpen collector exept by accident likely will sell this pen but wanted to find out more about this one.post-62498-0-46122500-1312637834.jpg

Well, that does rather indicate it's an all M,T&Co. object, at least. I've been looking into the Swans lately, and they're a bit of an enigma; loads of general info, but not much of specifics. Many of those specifics have to do with the English branch, too, as after 1915 they were the big impressive ones-- sort of a combo of Harpo, Chico and Groucho to the US wing's Zeppo/Gummo.

Ernst;

I agree that there is a lot of general and very little specific on Mabie Todd. I'd been interested on how long they used the Brandt (Boston Fountain) patent - that is what the 1904 date stamped on them is from. Seems nobody knows.

As far as this desk pen is concerned, Sheaffer started desk sets in lat 1924 so that is going to push Mabie to no earlier than about 1927. Striated plastic first hit in the mid 1930's so that is where I would put this pen. Mabies made nice pocket pens but, their desk sets were fairly cheap affairs.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
