Hello and welcome aboard!

The last word in FPs? I don't think we've ever been called that before.

As to initial advice, if you're looking for a first pen, there are quite a few threads on that around. I recommend using the "Search" function (top right of the screen) and looking at some of the pinned threads of "Frequently asked questions." An idea of how much you want to spend on your first pen would be a good idea also.

As to anything else, give us a few hints ;) . Hope to see you around, and again, welcome!

Welcome to the world of FPN. Once you get started with fountain pens the world will never be same. Have fun.

Thanks for tyhe welcome. What does anyone know about Arnold fountains? A friend of mine found three in his grandmother's home. Are they worth repairing? They seem complete except for the bladders.

Hi and welcome to FPN :D

It looks like this is the last word on fountain pens

The technically correct phrase we use is "the last refuge of the totally bewildered" :)

Enjoy your stay.

Have a good poke about - check out the various forums, pop into Chatter, have fun.

Don't be afraid to ask questions - nobody here bites :D

BTW - don't forget The Marketplace. The sellers are reputable people & it's usually an excellent spot for a fair price - and NO I don't sell pens, I keep them

Arnold Pens were third or fourth tier, very inexpensive pens. In my experience many are found deformed due to age or heat or such. The nibs are nothing special. However, I have some pen/pencil combos that seem to have held up better over time than the pens alone. I have one I prize that I restored as it was my grandfather's pen. It is full of teeth marks. Funny really, when I remember my grandfather, he didn't have teeth!

Thanx for the info on Arnolds. Another question: before it went out of business, Reform produced these unmarked brightly-colored plastic screw-top fountain pens with painted steel nibs. I don't think they were expensive when they were new, but they wrote really well. Do they have any collector value at all? Thanks again!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
