Hero 800

I am a huge fan of Vintage 45s. I have at least 5 of them with various nibs, including a Pendleton Point. I became aware of the Hero 800 today and looked around at what they sell for which appears to be at least $20-30. Is there any reason to purchase that pen other when you can find vintage 45s for that amount?

Late last year I bought a NOS Parker 45, absolutely as new in the Parker box for $25. Unless the Hero is better, only curiousity would seem to dictate its purchase. I think price is on the Parker's side.

No reason that I'm aware of.

I can remember reading somewhere that one reviewer had two Hero P45 copies and thought one of them was superior to the P45, while the other wasn't as good. I can remember that the Hero 800 was one of the two, but cannot remember whether it was the better of the two, what the other was or where the article was. :bonk:

If the H800 is as costly as a P45, then I suspect it was the better of the two.

If you like fine nibs.

I believe all hero 800s have a gold nib, whereas most parker 45s do not, and those that do command a premium.

I am interested in buying a Hero 800 myself, I really like my 616 I just acquired, so I would not be afraid to try another Hero. But the price does seem high to be a 'copy' of the 45. I have had 3 Parker 45s, all have had 14k nibs, but the Hero 800 has a 12k nib. I have never had a nib of this allow before, I am a little curious... :hmm1:

This is an old thread but I thought I would add to it. I have a Hero 800 that I am very happy with. I haven't seen them on eBay but I got mine from isellpens.com. It has a 12k fine nib that writes very smoothly. The nibs are interchangeable with Parker 45 nibs. For awhile I used a Parker broad nib in the Hero and it worked fine.

The only thing that I like better on the Parker is the nicer arrow clip (the 800 also has an arrow clip but not as nice). Otherwise I prefer the Hero, which is a flighter. The Parker 45, as some of you probably know, has a problem with warping grip sections. I don't know if that has been a problem on the Hero 800.

Does the nib (and feed) on the Hero 800 unscrews just like on P45 or is it press fit?

Yes, they are interchangeable.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
