Pilot Ratnamson

Got this from an FPN friend of mine (who happens to be one of the best illustrators I've ever had the pleasure to know) as a gift a short while back.

It's a Ratnamson (I think) pen with a Pilot 823 nib. A big 15 medium.

SO COOL!

I couldn't believe he was GIVING me this. When I got it I found out why he probably wouldn't miss it so much. As you can guess, the nib didn't really fit on the feed or in the section well at all. Pilot nibs have these little wings on them that fit into the feeds that they're made to fit on. Those wings really just got in the way on what is a typical Indian ebonite feed. So I ground the wings off. Yay! Fits so much better.

Still didn't really fit in the section though. The nib would wobble quite freely side to side once set, and that's no good. So I set it aside until I had a little time to play with it, and that meant a couple months until now.

The problem with it was the hole in the section. It's a bit oval shaped and way off center - and WAY too big for this nib and feed combo. A while back I helped out another FPNer with her Geha pen. The nib had a little bit of play in it and would move just a bit to the side when writing. So all I did was add a bit of shellac in the nib collar to tighten the fit for the nib and feed. It worked perfectly! So what I did just a couple days ago was put a couple layers of shellac all around on the inside of the section, for about 1.5cm or so. No need to coat the entire thing with shellac. Shoved it in and PERFECT. I still had to heat set the feed and align the tines a little bit, but by golly this is one marvelous pen!

Good job! Now, swap that 823 nib with a FA nib to make flexy pen with a HUGE eyedropper ink tank.

I KNOW! It's awesome isn't it??

Just think about this:

http://www.fountainp...ost__p__2011486

Buy nib units and a converter, and ship it to India to have a custom ebonite pen made for under $100.

I wonder if their converter fittings will work like Edison's, i.e. work as an eyedropper.

I only do that if there is no metal nor openings inside the body. I know there are no openings in these pens but is there a metal coupling?

Also, APPLEMAN can "hybridize", too.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
