Greetings all :) I discovered this forum when looking for a new fountain pen for my husband. He had unearthed an Osmoroid he used in his schoolboy days and was having such fun with it, I decided to get him a new pen. So many options, and much useful advice here on the board. I have to admit I was somewhat overwhelmed by the different variations available for a pen. I didn't know what to choose, and I wanted the pen to be a surprise. I ended up calling Pendemonium (no shop near by to browse and test, I fear) to ask for advice on the purchase. The gentleman who answered the phone was very helpful -- a new Pelikan with nib adjustments will soon be on its way.

Just wanted to thank all of you for sharing your knowledge with others -- reading about the joy of writing with a fountain pen, I'm afraid I made the mistake of picking up the Osmoroid to jot down my "to do" list. Now I want one :) I hope I can hold out long enough to at least try the hubby's new pen before I end up calling the shop back and ordering one (or two, or three...) for me.

Regards,

Peake

:D And so it begins!

Welcome! I think you will enjoy your fountain pens and I know you will enjoy your time here - it's about the friendliest place I've been!

Welcome to FPN from another member in Texas. Fountain pens are a great obsession that is relatively harmless.

Hey Peake!

As one Texan to another, welcome to FPN. It's a great place. Lots of helpful people. What part of Texas are you in? I'm in Austin.

Hi Peake,

I'm also in Texas, Austin to be exact. The newly formed Austin Fountain Pen Society just had its 3rd or 4th meeting today. If you are nearby, I'll let you know where and when for the next one, if you're interested.

Pendemonium is a most helpful and friendly store. The first working vintage fountain pen I bought came from them. Since then, I've managed to aquire a bevy of different old fountain pens. The best ones came from other people on the FPN here (via the Marketplace) or from reputable online dealers. Ebay is very hit or miss.

I'm getting my father an old Pelikan for Christmas. Maybe he'll like it even better than the newer one he lost.

Welcome to the FPN!

Hello, Texans! Alas, we're in D/FW, but only a few hours away :)

Thanks all for the welcome. The pen arrived a couple days, and it is so difficult not to open the box. It's calling me, I know it! er... I mean, it's calling the hubby... yeah, that is what I meant..

Regards,

Peake

When I buy a pen as a gift it never makes it to the gifting day before I give it to the person for whom it is intended. You know they may need to write something down and don't you need to check it out to make sure that it's working properly? Oh, by the way, there is a pen club that meets in Richardson every other month. I forget when the next meeting is, December I think. I'm sure someone will let us know the date.

Hi Peake:

DFW area huh?

Y'all should try and attend the North Texas Fountain Pen Colectors meeting in December. It will be held on Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at the Holiday Inn Select in Richardson, Texas. It's on the west side of 75 between Arapaho and Campbell. It starts at 7:00PM. It's agreat venue to learn and ask a bunch of questions.

Oh, there will be a few folks with pens to sell or trade.

Robert

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
