Pelikan M101N

Mine arrived on 12th May. I went for the F nib as my writing is quite small but I'd say it writes somewhere between F and M. A wonderful pen and well worth the investment. I use it in a particular notebook for particular thoughts.

A number on the Filler: "102" any idea what it stands for?

Cheers!

Hi, Hari:

I've seen these numbers stamped on the brass connectors of M800 and M1000 fountain pens.

As near as I can surmise, it's a date code used by Pelikan to reveal the manufacturing date of these pens.

If I'm correct, and I believe I am, the first number is the year while the second two are the month of creation.

This would mean your pen was made in 2011, in the month of February or 02, making the date stamp show as 102.

I believe this to be the case after having worked on several Pelikans with known manufacturing dates, like my 1995 Pelikan Old Style with the stamping numbers of 511 that would indicate to me that pen was made in 1995 and during November or the 11th month of the year.

I've seen the same number stampings on M1000 brass connectors of a known manufacturing date. One M1000 in particular I have now that I can see without taking it apart, as is the case with many using this method, by shining a bright LED flashlight through the striped barrel and using a 10X loupe I'm seeing the numbers 906, or the year 2009 and the month of June or month 06.

Now I have tried asking Pelikan directly if this was correct, no one I'd spoken with to-date could confirm or deny this, so it's my observations and my opinion as it stands that these are date codes.

If someone can prove me wrong, that's OK by me, but until such time I will continue to look for these numbers on pens I know the manufacturing dates of to see if they continue to match.

It wouldn't surprise me that the numbers you're seeing might indeed coincide with when your pen was made, I guess time will tell if they do indeed change next year to a number beginning with 2 instead of 1, for the year 2012.

“I view my fountain pens & inks as an artist might view their brushes and paints.

They flow across paper as a brush to canvas, transforming my thoughts into words and my words into art.

There is nothing else like it; the art of writing and the painting of words!”

I want one! Nice acquisition.

Thanks Shaqin, as per some reports, it seems that the stocks are running out fast as only 5000 were made.

Thanks for sharing Captain, enjoy your pen in good health.

Thanks for sharing your observations Scott. Feb 2011 makes sense, I hope other members chime in with the numbers on their pens, so we can determine a pattern.

Hari,

congratulations on you new pen!! It's gorgeus! I also like the pic with the Souverän family together for size comparation.

Inka,

It's a nice theory! I've been looking my two M1000: 905 and 908. Yes, the possible dates also make sence. My other two M800 have just a "800" number. Probably, 800 means M800. But we have to remember both M800 and M1000 piston fillers are the same. Maybe Pelikan did something to distinguish. And a M1000 from 1990?? How did they write?? It's fun to think about it!

All the best,

Fabricio

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
