Pelikan Blue Black Discontinued In The U. S.

Black Rose

Poor sales/unprofitable - would it not usually just result in a price increase?

Regulations changes - can't really argue with it.

Well I do hope they are going to repackage it. I quite liked the ink

Not always, price increase works if the price increase is not compromised by a further decline in sales.

The best way to increase profitability is to introduce a "premium" product with a perceived higher quality image and silently discontinue the standard one.

Hi,

Hi,

Pelikan Blue-Black includes an ingredient not listed in the US TSCA (Toxic Substances Control Act). ...

S1

I agree, it does not mean that it is toxic, but in order to have the ingredient listed, a petition needs to be filed, and this requires an investment that must be paid back in sales.

Hi,

In addition, and to clarify:

  • Pelikan 4001 Blue Black is still being produced.

Bye,

I've had an e-mail from a Pelikan Sales Representative UK & Ireland confirming that:

"I have been in contact with my production colleagues in Hanover. They

have informed me that 4001 Blue-black ink is only to be discontinued in

the US market due to a low market need.

Production will continue and the product will still be available in the

UK and Europe."

Although I've only been using 4001 Blue-Black for a few months it really is the best ink for my purposes, so I'm pretty relieved.

How does all of this effect Cross BB? Isn't that made by Pelikan?

Me too. Although I use it only in one of my pens, I'd like to keep it dedicated to this ink.

I bet that Pelikan is discontinuing "blue-black" and plans to market "midnight-blue", an identical ink with a higher-priced name, just like Mont Blanc.

I don't know the reason why Pelikan did this any more than I know why Montblanc changed names for their inks.

However, Pelikan has never seemed like the kind of company to me that would play games like that.

Hi,

I was informed by Pelikan Germany that the reason is what I indicated above in Post #40; restated:

  • Pelikan 4001 Blue Black is no longer being imported into the USA due to US TSCA Regulations.

The person who responded to my query did not mention sale volumes. IMHO the rationale is moot.

I included the link to this Topic in my query, so Pelikan may respond (officially) at will if they are so inclined.

Bye,

S1

"Warning: This well-established product contains a substance recently identified by the State of California as either a possible carcinogen, a possible catalyst for the election of questionably-qualified politicians, or a possible catalyst for an irritating over-dependence on the word 'dude', and we aren't going to reformulate it just for you, you long-haired granola-eating freaks. Sincerely yours, Deutschland."

I have no evidence for this, but it wouldn't be the first time California ruined something good for the rest of the country... :)

Every time I think I've found my favorite ink...

No more favorite inks for you! From now on, just LIKE them.

Oh, never mind. Just read the rest of the thread, and Pelikan will still make the ink; it will just be harder for people living in the U.S. to get it. I suppose that's fair play.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
