Dear all,

I guess I just wanted to thank this community for the wonderful resource these forums provide! I bought my first fountain pen (Lamy Safari F) a couple months ago on a whim. My search for better ink than I was experiencing with the stock Lamy cartridge led me here, and I ended up buying Noodler's black and a converter cartridge based on what I read.

Stayed in the forums a while, and then bought some of the Staples bagasse paper based on recommendations here (loved it, and have now stock-piled for future use).

And now, yesterday, I just wrote my first letter using a new Waterman Phileas F (also purchased based on recommendations in these forums). The Noodler's black and Phileas combination is wonderful - as others here have noted - and it is causing me to find ANY excuse to write!

I can see that this will be a long, enjoyable journey ahead of me, but this community will provide an invaluable guide down the path to get there. Thank you.

Cheers,

Chris Carignan

Welcome! I lived in CU for nearly 20 years (working and studying). My son and his finance are there in grad school now. If you wind up interested in vintage pens you may be well situated hunt in some of the small towns in your neck of the woods.

Hmmm, interesting. I'm new to this: what do you mean? Garage sales? Estate sales? Antique shops? I've looked at Carrie's Antiques in downtown Champaign, but they've been cleaned out of everything good, unfortunately!

Yes, just what I needed: another expensive bug bite!

So, let's see... so far the list has been... speaker hi-fi, headphone hi-fi, tattoos, photography gear, shaving gear, tobacco pipes... now fountain pens.

My wallet and I seem to be in an eternal struggle with colorful/shiny, expensive objects.

I was thinking estate and garage sales, especially in the outlying towns.

Sounds like a fantastic idea. I will look into this. Thank you!

I realize this post is old, but if you are still in Champaign and still on FPN, you should know there is a fountain pen club here -- Pen Central -- that meets every other month. Contact me for details www.penguy.net

What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about?

Ahh, I really appreciate the reply... but Champaign is a bit far from Sydney, Australia. Don't think I'll be able to make the meetings, unfortunately. ;)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
