A warm Hello

A warm Hello to everyone!

I am a Family Physician, born and raised in Puerto Rico, and practicing for almost 28 years.

Much like Babydoc (post Dec., 2004), my grade school years, back in the 50's, were taught with Fountain Pen in hand (popular models were the Esterbrooks, which I still have, Parker 51's and Sheaffers), and the Palmer Method of handwriting was the method we learned.

I've been using FP's ever since (ball points tend to slip and roll in my hand!)

Even though Med School somewhat "ruined" my handwriting, I've been trying to get back in shape, practicing the Palmer again, with a little ad-mixture of Peterson's Method (they are somewhat similar in appearance, although their approach is quite different). ;)

Welcome to FPN (we don't use that big name very much)... a place where the ink flows freely, where pens are abundant, and where the people are about as nice as you will find anywhere.

With Parker 51's, Esterbrooks, and Sheaffer's in hand you will have much to talk about pen-wise.

Cheers !

Keith

Hi Paoli,

Welcome to FPN! I'm sure you'll enjoy it here as much as the rest of us do, this place of slightly mad fountain penaholics :D.

Of course, I don't agree with Keith, when he says:

where the people are about as nice as you will find anywhere
People are much nicer here than you will find anywhere else :D.

Warm regards, Wim

And a Warm welcome in return, Paoli.

We're an odd little group but fun. Almost as much fun as the pens and ink. okay, that may be stretching it.

In the penmanship forum it would be nice to get a discussion from the docs here as to why their handwriting deteriorates so rapidly and why so few try to recover. (in my experience.)

Hey, great idea KCat. We could even expand the Doc's Corner to include an aches and pains folder :P Imagine the discussions we could have.

Him - Hey Doc, I have this problem...

Doc: Tell me about it.

Him: When I do this, I get this awful pain...

Drum Roll - ta dum ta dum

Doc: Well, don't do that...

I'm not sure about doctors, but my handwriting deteriorated quickly in physical therapy school. It was a matter of needing to write very fast, or lose important material.

and I sign my name so often here at work that it has basically become a big "K" followed by a straight line. Not to mention what all of the paperwork has done to the rest of my handwriting. My poor secretary is a saint. And for those of you who didn't know it already, secretaries run the world. Make sure you take good care of them.

Kathy,

In my former, corporate life before I retired, my secretary had a sign on her desk that read:

Do you want to talk to the one in charge?

Or the one who knows what's going on?

I gave it to her. ;)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
