:yikes: I think I have the exact same die as you. Did yours come in a hinged rectangular wooden box?

Back on topic, I gotta say the pens look fabulous.

Aren't the 144's and 145 the same size?

krw

No. The 145 is very slightly bigger and has a screw fit rather than a friction fit cap

There is also a size difference between the 80s and 90s 144s. The 142 (only made in the 50s) was smaller than the 50s 144. The 146 was smaller in the 50s than in the 80s, and the 80s 146s are smaller than the new 146s. The 147 is the same size as a new 146.

My 144 is one of my great favorites. One of the reasons I bought it was the convenient size to carry it in s shirt. Another reason was the 144's cartridge ability as not only does that make the pen easier to clean, my job entails a lot of writing in a pressure situation out the office and the ability to change a cartridge helps ( and why I carry two pens).

Great pictures! The 149 truly looks monstrous in front of the 144. Why is it that the star on the 149 seems rather small? On mine, it appears to be larger, almost like the 146's. Has the star size changed over time?

wonderful pictures, great way to compare them.

anyone have a 142, 145 for comparison to the rest?

A 142 wouldn't fit in that set since it is more like the original 144 than the later 144 shown in the pictures.

Yes, the stars have gone through many size changes.

Incredibly helpful, thank you. Reaffirms my recent 149 acquisition. And great to know I could also play softball with it in case I forget my bat.

Very nice!

One more reason to stick with the 149.

Indeed

Awesome post, I just obtained a 144 and wanted to see a side by side with the 146 and 149. Thanks so much!

Same here, I am enjoying my 144. And now I can see that I do not need (and likely would not use) a 149. Thank you!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
