S.f. Pen Show, Oct. 14-16, 2011

I'll be there for sure as I live only 10-15 minutes away (Lafayette). I've never been to a pen show before and am really looking forward to it.

I do have a (likely stupid) question, however. How is payment normally handled at such an event? I don't normally carry much cash on me but want to make sure I come prepared.

Cash is easiest, although some sellers may have the capability for CC transactions... cash... lots of cash...

I'll be going. It's my first pen show ever so I might need somebody to hold my hand a little bit

Methinks it's a reference to Joey on _Friends_...

That explains why it sailed right over my head! I'm totally TV-illiterate... I was too busy reading books in my youth :ninja:

That's not a bad thing... At work we often quote movies as shorthand when the situation fits! It may be clever, or it may show a lack of verbal creativity on our part... I'm still deciding! :)

I'm sorry, it truly was light-hearted! On a few forums I frequent, it is a friendly way of ... hmmm.... greeting you in an interested way!?

:headsmack: (That still doesn't read quite right...)

Meh. Humor: so fleeting...

P.S. I loathed Friends.

Anyone know which Pen Repairpersons will attended. Ink dealers???

John Mottishaw and Pendelton Brown have confirmed. I'm pretty sure Bjor of Monster Refill will attend.

Oh well! Interesting though, isn't it, how online culture varies slightly from forum to forum? I often find myself out in non-FPN places wishing for the dancing bunny icon! :bunny01:

I never cared much for Friends either, but Lisa Kudrow's character was the most of interesting of the lot.

That said, I'll check in on Wife by texting "How you doin'?"

I'm considering driving over the hill to the SF show. I'm not much into cities and such, but attending a pen show has to be interesting.

Do it, and don't worry, as the show isn't in San Francisco.

Could anyone tell me, how many people approximately attend the latest SF pen show? And any remarks about the previous show will be greatly appreciated. If you don't like to post, please pm me, thanks.

This is a new show. There hasn't been a show in SF in many years, so I expect there will be pent-up demand.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
