S.f. Pen Show, Oct. 14-16, 2011

Bert Oser and Jim Stephens with an assist from Roger Cromwell1 are hosting the San Francisco2 Pen Show this October!

In addition to enjoying the pens and personalities at the SF Pen Show, there are many other fun things to in San Francisco and vicinity. There is a page on the SFPS website that shows a couple of options: Fun Things to Do When You're In Town.

But that's not all, right, SF Pen Posse Pals?!

What else can visitors enjoy in San Francisco when they're in town for the Pen Show?

We have restaurants and comedy clubs and the ballet (although I think SF Ballet's season is now) and micro-breweries and art galleries and museums (SFMOMA, the De Young, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, the Asian Art Museum, to name only a few). Here, wait, look:

Museums in San Francisco

Restaurants in San Francisco

Comedy Clubs, Art Galleries, and other Fun Things to Do

There's Sausalito, Tiburon, Larkspur, and San Quentin (if you're into that). There's the Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park. There's Napa Valley with their many lovely wineries. There's Pen Posse. (I'm just sayin'.) There're stories to take back to your own cities (probably). (Maybe Pen Posse can come up with a Tour of Sketchy Places to Visit in Groups. We'll see if there's a buzz for that. Ha ha ha.)

What I'm saying is this... Vendors, reserve your tables (and bring something to batten them down with). FP aficionados, make your reservations now, and bring your cameras.

That's all I'm saying.

Who's in?

1This is how I understand it.

2Actually, at the Holiday Inn in Dublin, which is very close to the City.

You don't have to go all the way to Napa for wine. The hotel is in the tri-valley area which is part of the Livermore Valley appellation. The area near the hotel is surrounded by vineyards and wineries.

Yay, Joi!

Yay, closer vineyards!

And wine is sold in ALLLLLLLLLL the stores! (Or a lot of them.) (Probably not at, say, Kragen Auto Parts. You know what I mean.)

Ricky, I'm glad you gave us the heads up. Let's make this the Best Pen Show Ever!

I can always arrange for more wine. I know enough people in the industry to get some volume discounts. Let me see if I can get a case of my family's wine.

I thought we were doing the scotch tasting event.

I just realized that the U$C game is Thursday, so I don't have to miss Saturday at the show. Any Cal fans considering coming early to the show should find a ticket and get to San Francisco for the game at Pacbell Park. Go Bears.

My cousin and her husband started making wine a year and a half ago. I tasted some of the first batch at Christmas. Everyone in the Bay Area should go to Cal Divis Market, Deli & Wine Merchant (2794 California St. at Divisadero in SF). It's owned by my cousin and her husband. Notice the wine merchant part.

Loren, Ron , and I just left Roger's. We got pretty far on the set-up. I created an ink shrine for Penopoly's new digs. I'm going back Monday to take pictures.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
