Orange Ink Time

I have a new orange ink love. Mont Blanc Mahatma Gandhi. Closest ink I have to match is Pelikan Edelstein Mandarin. I don't think Gandhiji was colored orange and I never heard of a mandarin gemstone but I do like these inks. For those who love shading J. Herbin Orange Indien is probably the best followed by tie between Caran D'Ache Saffron and Noodler's Apache Sunset, and then the Pelikan Edelstein Mandarin. No shading with Diamine Orange at all. Compared to the MB especially, the Diamine Orange looks more like tangerine. The Pilot Iroshizuku fuyu-gaki (Japanese Sweet Persimmon Red (Vermilion) does kind of resemble persimmon, which is not exactly orange but hey, the photo (not a scan) need symmetry.

This is a game I can get in on... Ever since I picked up Noodler's Habañero a few years back - I've been hooked on these shading oranges. I've since added Iroshizuku Yu-yake and Fuyu-gaki and I'm looking to pick up CdA Saffron and/or Noodler's Apache Sunset as well. The irony is, I'm not normally a fan of orange - let alone as an ink. But these are all... Different. It's the shading that gets me, and draws me in. A Delta Titanio is a killer pen for these inks too (I have a medium). Between the ink and pen, the shading is madness! :)

What about Sailor Autumn 2010 Kin-Mokusei. It might be my favorite orange.....so far.

I'm orange illiterate. I have all the oranges, I just don't know them. Beautiful demo here in OP.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

Yum! That's a nice comparison of some lovely colours there.

I have all those except Apache, plus I have the Sailor Kin-Mokusei, PR Orange Crush and Shoreline Gold and a sample of the Iroshizuku Yu-Yake. Even made my own orange from Sheaffer Gold and Red. And I don't even like orange except for ink and a year ago I would've said hated that too. I can't decide if Saffron or Ghandi is my favourite. Or maybe Kin-Mokusei. Actually, probably the Sailor one at the moment. It's exceptional.

I'll agree with that. I recently acquired samples of both Mahatma Gandhi & kin-mokusei and they are very close in color, shading and behavior. They are both excellent inks.

K-M leans slightly more towards the yellow side and MG slightly more towards the red. If anything, I think that kin-mokusei shades better than the Ghandi.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
