Sheaffer Pen for Men

Excellent review, Roy! :D

I have a maroon PFM I (plastic cap and barrel, stainless steel trim, PdAg nib) and it is a marvellous pen. I thought it would be too large and heavy for my hands, but as soon as I picked it up and held it, I realized that it was deceptively large----it was just perfect for me!

As you said, the PFMs are only going up in price so I'd recommend that folks get them for a good price while they can!

Thanks for your revealing review Roy !

I have several PFM's in my collection, unfortunately I'm still missing one with a broad nib.

Reading your review I urgently need a broad nibbed PFM !

Thank you, your review is quite complete. However, I'd like to know your opinion about the cap itself: How do you like it? Does the clip work well? Do you think the cap should be screwed? When posted, does the pen remain balanced?

Thanks again

Thanks a lot for this excellent review, Roy. It put the PFM bug in me, and I now have a wonderful PFM I with a smooth, perfectly reliable fine nib. Thanks for the great info and comments about this pen. Mine also have been constantly in my pocket since its arrival.

One of these days I am definitely going to get a PFM. Hm, really must start looking for additional income stream immediately.

Isn't sanity really a one-trick pony, anyway? I mean, all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy . . . ooh hoo hoo hoo! . . . the sky's the limit!

Thank you very much for your immediate response.

I own a PFM V with black body and XF point and it has definitely become my favorite pen; I use it every day. Just like you, I haven't had any problems with it, but sometimes I think the cap should be screwed, like the old Balances', to give the pen more reliability when clipped to the shirt's pocket.

I asked about the balance of the posted pen, because the PFM V with its heavy all-metal cap has a very dalicate balance; if the paper is not smooth-enough, it could feel a little unbalanced.

By the way, I use Sheaffer sepia ink; it's very elegant.

Best regards

Great! What ink are you using? Mine has remained on a steady diet of Noodler's Blue-Black.

Hey Roy,

Mine is running Aurora black at the moment, which is one of my two "break-in" inks (yes, even though it's vintage, I still have to :) ). I was going to switch to something a little more interesting after this fill, but I actually really like the simple black-on-black combination I've got going.

I need to try Noodlers Blue-black sometime - sounds like a color I would like.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
