The Day To Day Thrills Of Of Writing With A Rigid Nib ...

pb2

Recommended Posts

Although I believe I will always enjoy the lush lashing that a wet flexer can produce on a page, for day to day "on the job" practical writing a flexing wonder might not be appropriate.

But .... the thrill can be no less pleasing with a rigid nail of a nib if .... ( that two letter word that can change everything) ...

IMBO ("BO" = boastful opinion) ... , it has been Mottified, Binderized, Miked, or in my case, Pendleton Pointed (thus the "BO").

What I am referring to is that rigid nibs make Wonderful Stubs, Cursive Italics & Obliques.

So... GET YOUR NAILS DONE!

At last mention Richard B and Michael M will be at the Philly Pen Show and I encourage you to jump on line for both/either. John M does not re-grind pens at shows but is certainly worth the wait in sending one to him. And speaking of worth, Susan Wirth , the Queen of Nibs and Mother of all Pen Shows, always has a grand selection of great nibs to jazz up your pen life. There are other nib folks as well with whom I am not personally acquianted, but those I have mentioned have lent much to my craft over the past few years.

I will be at the Los Angeles Pen Show, February 16 - 20 applying my Pendleton Point Panache to your pens if you wish. The left coast Pen Posse may swing by the table to party 'til midnight Thursday & Friday, so come get your nails done!! thumbup.gif

Here are a few pics of what rigid nibs can do regardless of pen price ~ :)

I have semi-flex nibs, and a few slightly flexible nibs I use.

I do have a couple of 'dry' semi-flex....got @18 semi-flex...also got a real wet writer one too...

I do have a choice of which nib would do what; not all are Too Wet, or Too Flexible.

I do not use my Full Flex nibs, in my hand is not ready for them.

How ever I do have two nails and a regular flex that will have to be modified...they got enough pen on them to make it worth while.

Your pictures do make it now necessary for me to find out exactly what the differences  are between the Masters who make cursive italics....or stubs.

Always something to learn on fountain pens.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Beautiful samples! It's all about the skill of the hand, methinks. The nib can make things easier or harder, but it doesn't make them possible or impossible.

There's a family story about an old cabinetmaker, back when such people used hand tools, who said "To do great work you need one of two things: great skills or great tools. You don't need both."

These all look incredible. I was trying to decide which one I'd choose if given the opportunity, but I decided I want them all!

Beautiful photos.

I have 5 Pendleton Points Stubs and CIs. I  them all! The only down side is that when I pick up a regular nibbed pen I find it writes boring. :roflmho:

You would be surprised to see how much nicer a Stub or CI can make your writing; everyone should at least try one.

This is unsolicited praise of Pendleton's work. I'm not affiliated etc, just wanted to share how lovely the pens are.

have you decided to do mail-in-grinds for 2011 yet????

Yup! thumbup.gif I enjoy it very much and find that most all of us pen lovers are really quite dear.

Thanks for asking.

Same here physicsgirl... I just received my first PendlePoint CI on a Pelikan 400NN and wow oh wow is it :puddle:

I am mailing him a Parker 51 tomorrow and the next Pelikan I pick up later in the year.

Not only is pb2 a talented craftsman, he is a wonderful person to deal with it. Truly a blessing to FPN and our wonderful hobby.

this year, or this month, or, more likely, this very day, we have failed to practice ourselves the kind of behavior we expect from other people.

Do you add tipping to nibs or just grind them? I am now thinking seriously about sending a few pens along to you whenever I go ahead with that CI Vanishing point nib. I will email you with specifics, Thanks!

Yup I have this great B Sheaffer Balance II I picked up in an antique store a couple of weeks ago that would be just perfect as a CI, and my VP, and my M805, oh and that Parker Urban. See these are the thoughts going through my mind now that I see Pendleton is taking mail-ins. My birthday is in a few weeks, and my family was asking what I wanted; Pendleton nib grinds. :roflmho:

I agree that rigid nibs are a great base for customizations. I even have some rigid factory stubs and italics that are wonderful for their line variation. But a lot has to do with the quality of the ink flow, and the nib's smoothness on paper. I also have some standard point rigid nibs that are a great change of pace and really fun writers owing to their ink flow and smoothness.

Still, I take your point on customizations seriously. I have a couple of nails that I an considering "getting done." B)

I just wanted to throw my .2 cents on Pendleton Point Panache!

I am a B nib snob, I hate tooth in my nibs, I want the absolute smoothest writing experience possible. I ordered a Namiki VP nib ground to a CI in Pendleton fashion, and I will say without a doubt that I don't regret it for a moment!

The nib writes perfectly, laying down a perfect line with enough variation that it gives my atrocious handwriting a little flair. I would not hesitate for a second to order another, and urge others to give Mr. Pendleton a chance.

No affiliation, just a satisfied customer!

Another satisfied customer here! A Bexley Simplicity with a B nib became a F CI. I like it a lot!

I also found out that Pendleton lives "just up the road." Next time, we're meeting at a Starbucks to do the handoff!

Thanks, I will keep that in mind and only have my nibs with enough tipping ground. It seems you have allot of happy customers, I hope to be another in the near future!

Be careful what you wish for! Ha ha ha!

These are great stubs, pb. (Note to self: Which of my stiff nibs could stand a bit of Panache? Hmm.... *Thinking, thinking...*)
