The sewing-machine is a Singer Model 128. Originally designed in the 1860s, it remained popular all the way until the 1900s. This hand-cranked vintage machine dates to 1936. It still works just as well as it ever did. Scattered around are a few other bits and pieces. My grandmother's tailoring shears by the Wiss Co. of Newark, N.J., U.S.A., the machine's box of attachments, an original Singer oil-can and a bentwood case lid.

 

The (green) and white cardboard box on the right holds the original 1930s buttonhole attachment (which still works), and the open box on the right holds the zigzagger attachment from the 1950s, which also still works.

 

One of the great things about having a portable typewriter is that I can type and write where-ever I want, without having to worry about how long the battery is going to last, how many feet my extension-cord has to be, or whether or not the cable is snagged on something on its way to the power-outlet.

 

I took this photo in my living-room, sitting in an armchair by the window in the afternoon sun, with the typewriter on my lap:

It's perfectly comfortable. Not heavy, not digging, and it doesn't shift at all when I type. I could do that for hours.

I don't think you could get quite more 'oldschool' than my desktop, at the moment. This is where I do most of my writing, reading and other paper-based activities...

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
