Fs: Brass Nib-cleaning Sheet

Recommended Posts

One of the most delicate, inaccessible, and often dirty places on a pen is the slit between the nib tines. A dried-out nib often has residue left over in the slit, and sometimes paper fibres or other guck works its way into this microscopic space. Gold nibs are particularly delicate, as razor blades or other, harder, materials can raise a burr on the soft metal or damage the tipping material. This interferes with ink flow and is very difficult to repair, making a bad situation (a mucked-up nib) far worse.

Yesterday my piece of brass sheet needed to be replaced, so I cut a few extra. Made from shim stock intended for the machining trade, this sheet is just 2.5 nanometers ( 1/1000" ) thick--about the same as heavy aluminum foil, but much less 'crumply.' It is tough enough for repeated use and thick enough to scrape dried ink from between tines, but thin enough to trim with a pair of scissors. The brass is corrosion resistant, and will not damage any part of a pen. Measuring a handy 1" x 1¾", they can be used as-is, or trimmed to whatever size you find handy. (Note: we hand cut these, so there may be minor variations in size; something in the order of half- or quarter-millimeters, but I do need to mention it.)

Five re-usable sheets per package, in an air-tight ziplock bag to prevent oxidation. US$4 per package includes shipping; paypal is easiest.

I think your measurements may be off.

Are you referring to the thickness specs? Actually, I got them off the box the big roll was in. Granted, I didn't check them myself, as I only have calipers, not a micrometer... ; )

Aha! Busted! My mistake was consulting a measures chart and assuming that the units were a decimal point apart. But it seems to have skipped a few units...

I shall edit my post for accuracy, and my thanks to you sir.

Ack! Spoken too soon; it won't let me edit the original.

Suffic to say here, then, that they are a paltry 25.4 microns thick...

Stella, I'm pleased to reinforce your smiley by confirming that it is, indeed, worldwide shipping. It helps when I can just slip them into a regular 1st class letter envelope.

It also looks like it's 1x2.5 inches, not 1.75.

Just an optical illusion because of the camera angle. Slicing metal foil I'm good at. Photography? A work in progress.

There has been enough interest in these that we are adding them to our permanent line-up. Feel free to PM me for future orders, or go through our website, on the tools page of our "shoppe." (Just as a side note, the price is a bit higher on our website: use the coupon code "FPN" in the checkout, and it will give you a 10% discount to bring it back down to the $4 FPN price. We like FPNers ; )

Oho! Neither did I.

For the sake of simplicity, for those with signatures turned off, it's:

  • 2 weeks later...

Mine arrived and are as described (the parcel came with extras ... little samples of stitch markers to test and feedback on for my knitting)

A very happy customer who couldn't ask for more

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
