If you are interested at all in vintage pens, the magazine alone is worth the annual membership fee.

I just joined today. Heck, for $40 I'll give it a try. It has traditionally been vintage heavy, not a bad thing of course, but as a modern pen collector/user, I have felt somewhat left out. I was told they will have a better mix of vintage and modern, and we shall see.

Now Dan, how long does it take to get the magazines and the ballot? Without ballot, I can't vote for you

I subscribed a couple of months ago, and I'm really enjoying the issues I've received so far. (The Snorkel back-issue is splendid.)

(However, it does make me jealous that we don't have such a cool pen culture like that here in AU - but I can read and dream. ;)

I have been a member for a long time. I've considered not rejoining, but the recent issue of the Pennant sold me again. What a great issue!

I'm seeing lots of improvement with the PCA recently. Jim is doing a great job with the magazine and, despite the past couple of days yammering, some of the infighting that was causing the worst problems with the Pennant seems to have diminished. Once the magazine is coming out on time, I think they will be able to focus on other tasks as well. Since Rick Propas left as editor they have had a strange journey and I'm glad to see Jim has managed to get it going in the right direction.

And if you're a member and haven't taken advantage of the library, you should. Dan Reppert does a great job with that and it is a wonderful resource for vintage pen research. That, too, has seen a lot of improvement recently as well.

I've been a PCA member for about 6 years. I really value the magazine and I've used the PCA library which is a wonderful resource for information about vintage pens and pen companies.

I saw the deleted topics. Seems a good enough reason not to join, if you ask me!

Hi,

We have had more moderns lately, like the Aurora Hastil and the Sheaffer Connaiseur.

Kevin, you could get us some good articles. :)

Usually the complaint with fountain pen publications is that the slant is too much towards modern pens. I like the fact that the Pennant is slanted toward vintage!

Andy,

There have been major changes made in the PCA that make it a much better organization than it was before.... Definately well worth joining.

Unfortunately, there are some people who absolutely refuse to accept this fact. Not only that but some have axes to grind, some personal and some organizational.

Despite the clashes I joined for a year. I've too much to learn to ignore a good source of information.

Nick,

There is no need to add coal to the fires. The moderators have plenty of other things to do, rather then douse the flames.

Thanks in advance!

David,

You bring this "ethical problem" up so often in reaction to anything posted about the PCA to the point of being pavlovian, and yet I can't think of a single instance in the years you have been beating this drum where you have actually stated what the "ethical" problem is.

As editor since January, I have had to deal with the PCA board and the PENNANT editorial staff frequently and can say that I have seen no evidence of any unethical behavior in the PCA. None.

This "ethical" problem you repeat ad nauseum must be something really so trivial or so dubious that it would embarrass you to say it out loud for fear of laughter, or you must, sadly, hold such a grudge against the PCA that you pick at this scab constantly because of some hurt (actual or imagined) that some PCA person did to you some time ago.

Or perhaps the true ethics of the PCA are so **shocking** that revealing them would cause the collapse of civilization and make all our pens melt (play scary bad suspense music here).

So why not put up or shut up. Tell us what the continuous and mysteriously unstated "ethical" problem is or go away with it. It's either real and all should see or it's bull. There's either a real ethical issue in the PCA or you're being petty and really, really, really boring. Just like a broken record. Or the boy who cried wolf. Is there a wolf or not? Well?

hi,

there is a new board of directors. all finances will be audited and the reports will be made available to the members. the new board promised transparancy. i believed them and joined.

i am uninterested in old feuds with the old board. no one is perfect. that's why we have the ability to forgive.

i hope the bitterness will abate.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
