My Twsbi Experiment

Hello pen lovers!

This is my second post to this forum in recent days (I don't know what's gotten into me  ). With all this talk about this wonderful pen and the different nibs we could have or wish for, I decided to try something. I'm sure I'm not the only one who did this but I wanted to share. I successfully changed the nib on the pen. I had a old Conklin flex nib in it first but alas, it needs to be re-tipped. Then I thought about the $15.00 pen that Nathan sells. This is the flexible one. Well it fits perfectly! I'm so jazzed. It wasn't hard to make the swap either. I just popped it in and started writing. So this may not be a big thing for more hands on collectors but it's big for me and I wanted to share the event with like minded pen-a-holics. Try it and post how things went for you.

Maybe I'll do this too - my Noodler's flex nib currently lives happily in a thin-model Sheaffer Balance.

Also, for writing samples on that nib check pages 1 and 2 of THIS thread.

Hello again. Thank you for posting a link to the written samples. I'm not quite savvy enough to be able to post my own handwriting. I can tell you that I have been writing with this new configuration and it's great. The pen that Nathan introduced is very petite and I would have loved it to be a bit bigger and not so narrow. In the TWSBI it feels better to write with.

How did the Sheaffer nib feel? I think I have sone in my small collection. I may have to try it. I did try putting a Plumix (from Target) in it but the nib has some sort of handle on both sides of the nib. I didn't know how to cut them off. It certainly would have made a very nice pen even without the flex. It would have made a nice option. If anyone knows how to get rid of those thing on the side of the nib, please post. I have an extra fine pilot that I got from Jet pens that I would love to use in the TWSBI.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
