The Owl Pen

Here's a Limited Edition pen that I made up for myself. A few years ago when the Cigar LEs were coming out, I thought that those pens were so ugly that it inspired me to make my own Cigar LE. I had an NOS eyedropper pen that I bought from a jewelry shop, a Sterling pen with a #3 nib, but it was missing its cap, so I decided to use it as the basis for my pen. Sterling Picard could probably tell you all about the pen. He collects these pens, and has written a history of this company for "The Pennant".

I had a local nature artist, a sculptor who carves most of his works from Deer antlers, make me a cap from deer horn. He did the carving, and I installed the turquoise glass-bead eyes. I had an old, mint-condition "White Owl" cigar box kicking around, and I inserted a tray from a Parker Centennial Duofold pen box, and there it was, my Cigar LE -- the Owl Pen! The antler material is quite light, and the pen is surprisingly well-balanced when the cap is posted, and the nib is super flexy.

Here are a couple of scans of the inside and outside surfaces of the cigar box lid.

I'll be away, starting tomorrow, at the Blue Mountain antique show in Calgary over the Easter weekend, Thursday to Saturday, and I will have the pen with me to show. I will also have some pens and parts for swap and sale, but most of all I will be there to buy pens. If anyone wants to get together for a mini pen show, or just to talk pens, bring some of your favorites along for show and tell.

Take care,

George.

Hi George,

Wow, very nice! I think the cap and pen go wondrously well together.

One question: as horn is a little porous, do you find the pen dries out quickly?

TIA,

Kind regards, Wim

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
