Sheaffer Nib Differences

I'm looking for a description of the different Sheaffer nibs: Triumph, Feathertouch, Lifetime. Is there a source in this forum or on another site that gives a description, and pictures, of each, including the numbering system on the Feathertouch nibs? I've looked here and on Richard Binder's and Jim Mamoulides' sites, but couldn't find this information.

Thanks very much.

I have a couple of Feathertouch nibs (a big 7 on a Vac Fil and a #5 on a Lady Sheaffer). They write smoothly. Some are stiff but the older ones have some flex. I believe the later Feathertouch nibs have the upturned 'waverly' design. Lifetime is not a nib type but I think the nibs on Lifetime pens were stamped with "Lifetime". These should be just like the Feathertouch nibs. I don't have a lot of experience with the Triumph nibs but the couple I used were very stiff and no better or worse than any other nibs.

I'm not sure about the numbering system but I know there are several spots on the web that list the codes.

Regards,

No. There are a lot of nibs though. Feathertouches were 5, 7 and 8. Early nibs were 2-8 (no #7) self-filling. Loads of special nibs Lady lifetime, 22 Student Special, 46 Special, Secretary, 3-25, 5-30, 7-30. There is an ad for a Student Lifetime nib but we've never seen one - figure it is an ad copy mistake (student pen and lifetime pen are on the opposite end of price so it doesn't seem likely). Triumphs have different offerings as well. When I get the time I'll do up something on nibs 1912-1941 (won't be anytime soon I'm afraid).

what is a Sheaffer pen with #34 imprinted on the tap of the cap? What kind of nib is it supposed to have? Thanks!

A 34 is a 3 nib on a 4 body. It is a popular size that becomes the 46 and then the 5-30.

Thank you very much for the compliment, but I don't think I am a better resource than is Jim's wonderful web site. Different, with some overlap, and complimentary.

No, I meant we say nice things about each other!

Of course, you are correct -- I will edit my post to eliminate the usage error. Thank you.

ETA: Darn, too late to edit my prior post.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
