Smell Of A Wality

So I decided to buy a few cheap Wality demonstrators from ebay. I just love the look of ink sloshing around in a pen and I wanted a few cheap pens that I didn't mind staining. (This was before I bought a TWSBI).

Anyway, I got three of them from two different vendors, and all three have this hideous smell, particularly around the threads and inside the cap. I'd say like stinky cheese, but not quite. Like super sticky plastic with the smell of stinky cheese layered underneath.

As a test, I cleaned the threads and cap with a light hydrogen peroxide mixture and left it to air for a few days. It worked a little, the but smell persists.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of it? It's bad enough I couldn't use the pen comfortably. Anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks!

Yes, the Walitys have an exotic smell, perhaps from the ebonite feed. It doesn't bother me too much though I have quite a nose for things. :roflmho:

Fat guy pen smell. :roflmho:

I've never noticed ebonite feeds smelling cheese-like. Ebonite pens smell like rubber bands and I'd imagine a feed of that material would smell the same.

I'd rather spend my money on pens instead of shoes and handbags.

I'll save Hari the trouble and explain that it's the grease, which is not silicone. I queried him on a couple of Airmail EDs. I wiped off the grease as he suggested and replaced it with pukka silicone. The niff is still there but much fainter - it won't have people looking at your armpits and dogs following you in the street. I hope it will eventually disappear.

When you're good at it, it's really miserable.

I have 2 Wality Airmail EDs and never noticed anything, so I took off the cap and took a whiff inside the cap and of the section. There's a very faint "rubber-band" smell, but it's not noticeable unless you stick your nose there.

The one that I cleaned with peroxide smells much less, but it still smells. I guess I'll do a vigorous cleaning of the other two and leave them to air out. I hope the stench will eventually disappear. :)

Thanks guys!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
