Ok, so I am not really doing the thorough, in depth reviews that most of you do. I'm not experienced enough to be that discriminating yet. My interest mainly lies in the ink color more than anything else. I just thought I would link these so that people get yet another perspective on what this stuff looks like on paper. As a newbie, I want to see as many different examples as I can before I shell out the cash. I figured someone else might too.

This is just a blog my husband and I do for our own amusement more than anything else. The premise is living like you've got money, when you don't.

I agree. I've got 6 whole bottles of ink to my name now, and it is a favorite. I received PR Blue Suede and Burgundy Mist in the mail today though...so I kind of like all three equally right now.

It was one of my first acquisitions, too, and 40 bottles later it's still a favorite.

The whole reason I wanted a "real" FP was for Herbin PDL. I still want that ink, but as I looked at the Goulet Swab Shop, as I do for hours on end, I was afraid it would be too washed out and went with Ebony Purple instead. I'm glad I did. It is a very unique color, you can't get it in a gel pen or ballpoint. So pretty and interesting, yet practical somehow. I love the versatility, and I wasn't sure I'd get that as much with PDL.

Meanwhile back on topic - I agree on the colour of black cherry - I was desperate to get some and when I did I was disappointed by the 'brown' colour that I could see.

 

Ebony purple - I've seen it in letters and I like it but the UK is a Noodler's desert at present.

By the way reading the 'bio' on the blog - have you put yourselves up for the ink exchange (thread pinned at the top of the 'Inky thoughts' forum)? It's a really great way of trying new inks at a much lower cost and avoids expensive disappointments.

In my opinion, it would be easy to mistake it for black under certain lighting, especially if you weren't "looking" for a purple. On the other hand, you can see the purple pretty easily. That doesn't quite make sense, but is a lovely ink because of this property.

That's an issue I have with Ebony Blue (the PR version not the Noodler's ) - using a wet italic broad Conway Stewart nib on Oxford Optik paper you lose a lot of what makes it special.

 

As many do say around these parts - it's not just the ink - it's the nib and it's the paper (for instance I love Diamine Prussian Blue but it doesn't like Optik paper and skips horribly in my pens - so far anyway).

 

Some inks are so nice I have to use medium or even (shudder) fine nibs to get the true effect of the ink!

I'm trying to figure out what size nib I like, I have figured out I'm a "medium" and up kind of gal. The angles I write at are too varied for anything smaller. I think Ebony Purple would still be purple unless it was very, very wet. Someone with more experience with EP may be able to confirm or deny that for you. I don't think the Lamy 1.5 nib is too wet or too dry considering the size line it puts down.

I recommend getting ink samples from Goulet Pens of the Cd'A Storm, J.Herbin PDL, R&K Scabiosa, and Diamine Damson. Then you can have a dusky, muted purple ink festival, and compare the tones. Some are more red-violet, some more blue-violet.

 

P.R. Ebony Purple is in a class by itself. ( love it! )

 

I made my own mix of Eggplant, with Diamine Imperial Purple and Sunshine Yellow, with Parker Quink black, to get the neutralized deep purple color. I was shooting for a deeper Damson color.

Nice review. The black cherry is very close to PR Fiesta Red.
