Carter pen ad

I just received a wonderful 1927 magazine advertisement for the Carter Pen. I have two of these beautiful pens (as well as a ringtop), and the ad provides some interesting detail. I'm not sure if advertising back then was as deceptive as it can be now, but I'm going to believe what I read here ;)

A closeup of the description for easy reading:

I'll try to take some decent photos of the pens to share in the photo forum later.

Unbreakable, eh? ;) Hmmmmmm......

I love the ad; thanks for posting it here, Elizabeth.

Carter's ink bottles had some nice drawings of various animals (cats & kittens, birds, beavers, fish, etc.) on them. I love the ads for their ink too:

Unbreakable? Trust it but don't test it, Elizabeth!

Not to be crass, but I wonder about what some of the subtext may be in your ad. "Just Married," "Starting out Right," the blushing bride and leering bellboy...hmmm....

Ads are a great window into vintage pens and these three are greats. I have one of the kitten ads, taken from Life magazine as well.

Love your new avatar, Maja--that's one cute wire hair fox!

Hi Dan,

I had some computer "issues" and I missed seeing your post when I logged back on (I think I had 3 pages of new posts to look at!)

Thanks for the compliment; that's 'Dharma', one of my parents' two w-h fox terriers (Chandler is the other one...the "nice" one  )

I love your avatar of 'Red Girl', your lovely Irish Terrier; what a nice photo---that intelligent face with those always-ready-for-fun-or-mischief eyes... Terriers are great dogs!

Take care,

Maja

P.S. Hey, Elizabeth, don't you have a Jack Russell terrier or two?

I remember having a magazine advert from when the Parker Duofold was re-issued. It was of the pen lying on a beautiful art deco desk. I lost it somewhere, much to my regret. I would love to have it now.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
