Teacher Said: "get A Ballpoint."

It will still get him a grade lower even if he was to bring a note from his doctor.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

I'd ignore him unless he raises the issue a second time. Then I'd ask rather incredulously (but politely) if he is serious and why, while simultaneously pointing out a reason or two you use a fountain pen - e.g. you find them more comfortable to write with than a ballpoint. Note that sometimes you have to be careful with asking the "Why?" question as some people interpret it as a challenge to their authority.

If he doesn't have any objective reason such as legibility or permanence it could be he was teasing you. He might regard fountain pens as a pompous affectation. In his eyes using *any* fountain pen gets you the sort of disdain normally reserved for Montblanc poseurs.

As for his beliefs about why ballpoints superseded fountain pens I suspect he thinks: convenience, cost and reliability ... and he'd be right.

Man! Sound like he's afraid of "getting ink" on his hands! (LOL)

(Some of my colleagues/students have mentioned this to me,

but never said to "stop using them")

Don't get mad- get even!

Buy a RB pen that uses FP ink!!

Many brands have them- even Visconti got into this mode this year with a Rembrant model that is a RB that uses FP ink.

It is a German made point (I think Schmidt).

Here's what you should do:

1) Start using a BP pen in class.

2) Bring your baystate blue with you to the teacher's office the next time you see him.

3) Tell your teacher: "Hey teach, since you suggested that I start writing with a ball point, I guess I won't be needing this anymore."

4) Pour your entire bottle of baystate blue on his persian carpet.

5) Laugh maniacally.

Okay probably not the best advice, but it'll be funny in a twisted kind of way.

I'd ignore it. I mean, not intentionally. I would just plumb forget.

Exactly. I am sure that this cranky human is used to it. Alternatively, no need to start a tiff by overreacting to an offhand comment by somebody who might just be having a bad day. You might switch to black ink which might attract less attention.

All things work out in the end. If it is not working out, it is not the end.

The only thing I can think of is, like KCat said, the teacher may be worried about spilling liquid on the paper and having the ink smeared. Other than that, it's curious that he strained his eyebulbs and his brain enough to say .. "oh.. a fountain pen! naughty naughty! "

I'm not sure confronting this teacher on this issue is worthwhile. Petty despots in the classroom have a way of making one's life miserable, especially over small things. Use a ballpoint in this class. You've only got the guy for one semester (if college) one year if in high school.

Well, I'd just ask him what he meant by it.

I'm sure I wouldn't let something like that pass without comment -- but keeping in mind, I'm a lot crankier now that I was back in my school days.

I suspected this would happen; this thread is just seething with indignant indignation! :ltcapd:

I would ask him if there is something you could do like change the ink so you can still use a fountain pen. Its your preferred writing instrument. If the teacher just has some personal vendetta against fountain pens then you shouldn't have to suffer the blunt of the teacher's personal feelings.

If the teacher has a very good legitimate reason why you shouldn't use a fountain pen, then you should at the very least listen to their advice.

I use my fountain pen to take all my notes and to take some in class essays (final papers) and have never received a "get a ball point" or something like that. In fact, one of my professors has started to talk to me about fountain pens and has signed up here on the fountain pen network! See what fountain pens can do for students?

I would let the comment go, but then buy and slip him a beginner fountain pen at the end of the semester once your grade is in :) Maybe a pelikano?

What kind of subject is this class in? I wish it is history, philosophy, literature. I would tell him all the great manuscripts you ask us to read and understand were written with FPs and Dip pens.

I think of my FPs as my children.

Measure the teacher's attitude before proceeding. You have no power in this situation.

My grad school GPA was 3.98 (out of 4.00). I received all "A"s except for one "B" in an American history class taught by a Pulitzer Prize winner --- pointed out he had made a serious logical error in his book... in class in front of everyone... bad move. No one else had half as much red ink on their essays as my pages... he must have spent 4X longer working up my exam booklets.

first fountain pen: student Sheaffer, 1956

next fountain pen: Montblanc 146 circa 1990

favourite ink: Noodler's Zhivago

favourite pen: Waterman No. 12

most beautiful pen: Conway Stewart 84 red with gold veins, oh goodness gracious

Oooh.

Bring a travelling inkwell, some powdered ink and a dip-pen to class instead. That might be fun...

that's hilarious haha!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
