Ralph Prather Custom Parker 51

Unusual, of course, but the looks of that one do nothing at all for me, I'm afraid.

Damn, Aysedasi, and I was just going to ship it to you.

I guess I'll just keep it.

No problem. Everyone has different tastes. I love it.

I ought to say Doug that I've seen other examples of Ralph's work which I covet very much. It's just this one which doesn't quite float my boat..... But I'll happily have it if you're desperate to gift it to me...... ;)

Unfortunately, I sent it off to Glenn since he seemed to like it so much.

(now watch as Glenn, poor soul goes to the mail box day after day to find nothing...).

Update:

Just back from the PO for food and a change of clothes.

The pen hasn't arrived yet.

Nice background story, Ralph! I love those!!!

(Ah, poor Glenn.... ;) I'd feel sorry for him, except that I've already seen photos of his Prather pens!)

Making these is certainly a fun diversion from retirement. A few assorted examples:

Wow, Ralph, thank you for posting the pictures. What wonderful eye candy first thing in the morning (especially now that your website appears to be gone :( )

Actually Aysedasi, I'm not at all offended. Like they say different 'strokes' for different folks.

What a gorgeous pen! I love those red jewels and the hammered plunger. The more of Prather's work I see, the more I love it! Many thanks for all these posts and for the great pics from Ralph.

Ralph was kind enough to take a few photos of my pen when he had it. Despite what an earlier poster said, I think the hammered cap looks great on this pen.

Absolutely fantastic pen.

I've looked at some other works by Mr. Prather as well here on FPN.

It's like these 51's have been given a soul.

Thank-you for the review and enjoy your new friend.

It is always exciting to own a one of a kind item. As long as you are pleased with the fountain pen that is the most important point in this discussion. I would be happy to have this fountain pen in my collection, even with my tendencies toward tradition and conservatism.

I agree--I love hammered metal and this example is a great one! The hammered plunger--with a transparent blind cap to show it off!--is a very exciting innovation, I think.

Lovely pen, enjoy!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
