Sheaffer Commemorative Or Nostalgia

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I need some insigh, being a novice.

I would like to buy either a Commemorative Sheaffer pen (1997) or a Sheaffer Nostalgia pen (the whole etched silver or GF one)

I wonder if any of you have tried both, and if they could give me some comparaison (look, finish, feeling, working nib and so).

Commemorative look a little prettier, finer engraving, but I really wonder about the lever filler system too (seem messy and bags have to be change, don't they?)

If it may help you, I am not a collector: I would like to positively use this pen (few times a week).

(top one is commemorative, bottom one nostlagia)

Thank you very much for your time and advice... Or maybe a tempting other suggestion ?

Mariehelene.

Can't really help you.

I do have THIS Nostalgia ...

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j95/glenn-sc/SheafferNostalgia-14k.jpg

But I haven't used it as it only uses the short cartridges, of which I have none.

And it won't take the regular Sheaffer converters.

I have the Commemorative Balance, which is a Lever filler.

It works very well, as well as the Balance IIs, which are C/C pens.

Thank you for your answer, especially Glen-SC

I did not know about the Commemorative Balance, it seems a real masterpiece.

It remember me of my grand-father office, he was an attorney...

I finally opted for the Commemorative pen (over the vermeil Nostalgia)

The look is gorgeous, and very intricate.

Writing seems smooth and fluent, but as the pen is really heavy, I do not put the cap on.

But I am quite afraid about the lever filling (never had one)

I did not fill enough the first time, and did not know how to dig the pen for filling (instruction booklet is very bland and useless). I hope that these bags are sturdy enough and last... But as many pen lover seem to like them, it reassures me.

Thank you for your help and advice.

The two biggest issues with a lever fill not filling fully are:

not leaving the nib and part of the section submerged long enough to get a fill

not trying additional level fills until no more air bubbles come out when the lever is raised.

Are you sure this won't take a converter? I just picked up a solid sterling (802) Nostalgia and a 1970s vintage squeeze converter fits great.

Hi Teri,

The pen in the picture is a LE 14K Nostalgia 1924 with dates from around 1970, these models may have been designed to be used with carts only because the Sheaffer bar convertor doesn't fit the pen, however the old style Sheaffer push button convertor will fit the pen so maybe this was supplied with the pen?

I just tried a squeeze converter from a Connaisseur and it is about 3/16th inch too long.

I got the pen as part of a lot and it had no converter when it arrived.

Looks like your pen's got a newer style Nostalgia nib unit fitted, could you confirm the pen is stamped 14K on the clip and numbered on the black plastic part of barrel.

The clip is marked "14k" above the white dot.

The cap edge is marked "SHEAFFER 14K MADE IN USA".

The gold overlay of the barrel is not marked anywhere.

The black plastic part of the barrel is marked "2080".

The nib is marked "SHEAFFER'S 18K 750 MADE IN USA" and has a cartouche with "STE", a diamond, and "FF" all surrounded by an oval.

The section has the "M" for medium nib print.

I hope that helps

If the squeeze converters don't fit get a modern piston converter and sandpaper down the black plastic turning-knob on the top until it fits. You can get rid of ~2mm of plastic without affecting the mechanism at all and bit more without affecting fill capacity.

Glenn,

Your cap and barrel is the 1924 14K gold limited Edition Nostalgia from 1970, but the two tone nib on your pen is from the 90's. When new the pen would have been fitted with the plain 14K Nostalgia nib.

This push button convertor will fit if you can get hold of one.

This was an informative thread. Thanks to you all for the information.

I have 2 Nostalgia's - a 14k and a sterling silver one. Both of these have the plain 14k nib, so I guess they are some of the older ones. The gold one has 1821 on the barrel; the silver one has 2704. Both of them came with a cartridge inside, but no converters. Of course, I don't have any paperwork or original boxes either, so I don't know if they came with a converter or not. I have never used these pens because I don't really like to fool with cartridges. Guess I need to be on the lookout for the push button type Sheaffer converters.

Thanks for the info on the older versus newer Nostalgias and the possible converter issues. I think the ones I have are all from the later series, because they all have the two-tone nib. But now I know to confirm the squeeze converters will fit!

I have a SS Peterbilt pen, I know nothing about this pen except that its detail is amazing. Any info on it would be awesome.. It's not with me so I'm unable to list markings etc..

Can someone identify this pen? I came to this thread because I thought it was the Sheaffer Nostalgia, but it's not. The clip says «Parklane» and the nib says «Sheaffers».
Thanks in advance.

Sure doesn't look like the original nib to me. Too small.

What type of sac is in this LE? silicone or rubber?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
