Cahier #16 - William Morris "The Owl 1897" - Mango

After clamping the corners ...

The bump is alot flatter.

Less obvious.

Becos of this sequence of trimming away after stitching, the flyleaves can be exactly sized to the covers.

Here you see the flyleaves already glued into position.

The flyleaf is perfectly aligned to the fabric covers.

After glueing the flyleaves.

Its piercing the stations at the head and tail of the Cahier

Here you see the holes freshly pierced at both head and tail of the Cahier.

I used matching yellow linen threads by Guttermann to stitch this head and tail.

fpn_1570717317__dscf8993.jpg

This way, the yellow threads appear at the outside of the Cahier

I found the threads a little too thin....

so I decided to take it off ...

fpn_1571576967__dscf9013.jpg

and replace it with a little wider thread ..

This is 0.66mm , lightly waxed.

Now with the new thread

Chose a nice olive drab flyleaf. Its textured.

I used dental floss this time.

To keep the Cahier as flat and thin as possible.

The green threads appear only for a short stretch at the head and tail ...

fpn_1571578464__dscf9027.jpg

The bulk of the green stitch knots does contribute to the bulk of the cahier.

The green knots , even though flattened with pliers, keeps the cahier slightly open.

None of this problem for the dental floss at the central part .

Excellent topic. Those 'William Morris' cahiers in particular are works of art.

Coming up to the new year, I'll have a few pages left over in an old bullet journal. I might trim them out and try my hand at this.

Some blank greeting cards are very close to B5 size ...

so I got some B5 notebooks , ripped out the good paper and stitch them into these cards...

fpn_1581053239__20200204_093255.jpg

All are stitched with linen thread by Gutterman ...

Thin enough to not cause bulk in the cahier ...

fpn_1581053283__20200204_093833.jpg

Here the B5 sheets forming the bookblock is cut to match the card exactly...

Simple stitch with either gridded or unlined paper from DAISO.

Good paper that is ink friendly ...

This is Cahier #45 - "The 12 Disciples"

made in Midori TN size large , exact same size as the notebook refills.

bound with TR paper , 52g Cream ,  supersmooth

Re-purposed a wall calendar that had these beautiful caricatures of the 12 Disciples of Jesus.

This small pic on the front cover was just the right size to use as a cover for the cahier.

DSCF0140.JPG.02c7f6ba69863d773e83b46eedba2a62.JPG

Front and rear covers ...

you can see some discolouration - sun bleached - the sun's rays in our tropical climate here is really harsh.

DSCF0150.JPG.82f2bae9056db32a5ac62d08e2b47368.JPG

The thread - waxed dental floss - runs round the head and tail of the cahier, to give some protection from abrasion cos of the way the Midori TN is designed to carry their innards.

Dental floss is a good choice becos its very flat

DSCF0147.JPG.4dfa7c837133f7a0be37f120f0fd8029.JPG

BEFORE - the 'fishtail effect '

DSCF0135.JPG.ad0dcf1a3b9561db0e832e3e65ee6e91.JPG

Place the cutting mat in the centrespread of the entire notebk and trim off the 'fishtail' .

repeat on the other half that needs to be trimmed off.

DSCF0138.JPG.6ae271093350d2614401773a081f17a1.JPG

AFTER - The 'fishtail effect ' removed.

DSCF0139.JPG.96cd173492ea7b3444c6934d78ca4a19.JPG

Then punch the corners again to refine it ...

DSCF0142.JPG.2d1c6a6af59e83cf10a8dbbae8be641e.JPG

Unlike my usual exposed-spine journals which benefits from precision at each crafting stage,

here, Its alot easier to trim the notebk to size AFTER completing the stitching.

This way , you wont go crazy and can do this quick, around 20mins. 😄

Writing paper is TOMOE RIVER paper (old version) , 52g , Cream

16 Folios

Total 64 writing pages (to replicate the Midori TN refills )

DSCF0153.JPG.99faa03a6f5e5c5ac1252a28f16c65c0.JPG

A quick project you can make in about 20mins with materials that are readily available round the house.

For refinement, I do clamp my cahiers flat for a few hours after completion.

It really does help to make it stay flattened like a notebk should.

For proper tools, ask your wives to source for you tapestry needles (ballpoint needles)  size #24 or #26 I cant remember.

Big eye needles with blunt tips.

😊

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..
    • A Smug Dill
Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
