Why is the piston leaking in a brand new pen?

 

Pre-production version.

 

Another variant on the way soon.

I always get a kick out of these "no affiliation" notations when it's blatantly obvious the poster has absolutely nothing to do with the brand, company, etc. beyond being a customer. It must be a feel-good/feel-important thing. So I'll note up front that nothing I write here on this forum is influenced by any financial-gain motivation.

I've just received my new piston plunger thingy. How much of the included silicone grease should I apply? The diagram shows what appears to be a cotton swab applying it, but I think that would get an awful lot on there, and might lead to the grease-in-the-feed issue.

Is this a new 1.5 piston the you received?

Use less than you think you should use. You could probably apply a thin coat around the piston's two bulges and then use a tissue to gently wipe it off; I'd bet the remainder would be enough.

Thanks, will do. :) And yes, it's the 1.5 piston. If I've received mine ahead of schedule, that's because Speedy was killing two customer service issues with one mailing. There was a problem with the nib (a glitch in Bock's manufacturing process, not TWSBI's), so Speedy sent the new piston along with my new nib. I am tremendously impressed with the quality of his pen and his customer service. :thumbup:

Bock or Schmidt? The 530 was using Schmidt nibs.

The inability to use a new pen for 5+ weeks borders on "teh suckage." :blink:

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
