Twsbi Diamond 530 Piston Seal Leakage Report 2010/07/20

To add a positive note to the leaking issue, I received my ebay pen today as well. It is filled with Old Manhattan Blackest Black, and I have no leak to report. It's a nice little pen and I look foward to really putting it to the test this week at the shop.

My eBay-sourced pen also came today. It's sipping on MB Racing Green with no sign of a leak at this time. It's a huge pen. It dwarfs the Pelikan M150 I also got today.

Finally got my pen (part of the 300 pre-order initial batch).

Very nice and substantial pen. I concur with most of the positives expressed in this thread and other related threads.

Unfortunately, my pen has a nasty leak. Ink has breached the first piston seal. After 24 hours, the leak is still contained between the two seals.

Will wait for feedback from TWSBI on the replacement piston seals.

The syringe and needle to fill the pen with ink is so clean and neat.

Besides , I don't see leakage past the piston with this method.

Can more people try this method to confirm my finding?

May I ask when the 1.5 piston version TWSBI will be on the market? It will definitely be my next purchase.

I asked him that and he told me that ones being sold on ebay now are the ones that are 100% water-tested.... not sure version though.

On a side note, my shipped today ;)

According speedy's update on July 20,it is likely the 1.5 piston is still in the testing stage.

Must be a difference between the 1.5 piston and being water tested obviously then. Which would make sense because he did tell me that if I experienced any issues that he would ship me out the updated piston.

Guess I should pay more attention haha.

Received mine over a week ago as I was locking the house to go to the airport! Have only just returned and tested it... great pen. There was a miniscule leak from feed into section but that's almost disappeared again. It's less than my M205 demo managed -- that can blob from around the feed!

Speedy, do you need a picture of the section or is that normal?

On the whole it's a great pen -- nicely balanced, a smooth writer (F nib) and wonderful to behold. I can see me buying more for myself and some as presents.

Greetings,

I too was part of the initial 300 or so that received the pen the first time around... Mine leaked several drops of ink into the area between the seals but didn't get any worse. Since I had placed another order through TWSBI for their mechanical pencils (they are very nice, by the way), I asked them if they could send a tested piston in with their shipment. I recently replaced the piston with the new one I just received and as long as one isn't rough with the pen, it doesn't seem to leak at all. If you jar, bump, shake or even drop the pen gently onto a table, then a few drops find there way into the area between the two seals of the piston.

I initially tried the replacement first with water, but now I've emptied it and put ink back into the pen. Since returning to ink, and being just slightly careful with the pen, the area between the two seals is relatively dry without any real sign of the ink leaking.

Speedy, does this make sense to you? Is this what you have encountered before?

Many Thanks, Best Wishes & Kindest Regards,

Stephen

I got my EBAY pen today, and it is filled with PR American Blue. Beautiful, well made pen. Very smooth writer. It does have the problem of leak between the two piston seals, but does not leak past the seal so far.

My question is, will the new pistons be sent automatically to the current owners, or do we need to contact someone to get on the list when the new pistons are ready?

Thanks

Randy

I am anxiously awaiting my pen, and will make it my everyday user at work (as I just LOVE the looks of it)... if it leaks, I'll just have him send out an updated piston... even with a leak, I'm not worried... the looks and customer service seem top notch!

You might want to have him send you a new barrel when it gets finished up, might fix your problem.

Orangos,

miniscule leak from feed into section. If you have picture, that would be great, if not, that's ok. If the section is secured to the barrel tight enough (not over, of course) I believe there should be no leak.

Stephen,

the piston you got is just the water leak tested, future 1.5 version should perform even better.

Speedy, any estimate on when 1.5 will be ready? Also, how will we know what version we are purchasing on Ebay? THANKS!

@Speedy:

Hello, I received my pen (through eBay) few days ago and love it. It does however have the leaking issue---a few drops of ink can be found, past the first seal, after filling. Where or whom must I contact to fix this issue?

Thanks

This is a shot of my TSWBI loaded with Caran d'Ache Saffron Ink.

I used the syringe and needle method. There is no noticeable leak past the piston.

As a matter of fact , my pen does leak if I use the piston to fill it up.

How are the nibs sizes on these - more similar to Asian pens or Western ones?

I would say Western because the nibs are from Schmidt, I believe.

Great, thanks! I'll probably give an XF a try once V1.5 is being shipped.

i'd say my EF is actually pretty big. love it though. similar to my sheaffer fine nibs (the old sheaffers, my 30s balance and 40s vac fil) and my 304 F nibbed sheaffer/wality.

I am very pleased with my new F from the Ebay store, but it does leak past the first seal at two places.

I didn't notice it until I read this thread.

I had another concern, but I realized this was not due to a defect, but rather a design decision and my behavior.

I am not at all a pen expert, but I have Lamy 27's, MB 2XX's 3xx's and a 146, and a Pel M405 for piston pens, and I love pistons! With all my other piston pens, when posted, the cap fits on the barrel of the pen. With this pen, the posted cap is only on the piston knob.

If one turns the cap the wrong direction when removing it to cap the pen, and if the pen is over one's notes, one may wind up rewriting that page of notes, after using all the remaining Kleenex soaking-up Aurora black from the Levenger Morgan desk blotter.

I was very upset at first, thinking this beautiful diamond of a pen burped on me. Well, it did, but my behavior caused it.

If you post this pen, it does require discipline while recapping!

This Diamond of a pen is so perfect in my hand, apart from the awkward post position, that I am hopeful it will obviate the pressing need I have been feeling to get my second Pel, which will be a 800 or 1000, until my wife loosens the strings. At the cost of rewriting a page of notes, and the last 20% of a box of Kleenex, my marriage is secure.

Not having held those larger Pels apart from a few minutes each in a friendly bookstore in San Jose, Costa Rica, is there any support for my perception that there is some similarity gripping this Diamond and those Pels?

Cheers,

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
