I was discussing the design of the current and the next models of TWSBI pens with Speedy, and said I would post this poll and share the results with him. Please post your preference for body style.

I like the faceted body - and like farseer911 I would love better nibs........even steel ones, but at least italic! The one in my pen is smooth and writes perfectly, but is hard as a nail and just an M - not wet, not dry..........just an M! I know this will mean costs + but for such a great start, why not at least have the option?

Yes, would like italic or a stub! And a XXF option.

Also if it's possible to make the pen shorter--although I'm probably one of the few who would ask for a smaller pen...

edit for XXF  Would like something like Pilot/Sailor F

I got an EF from my original order. Now it's not exactly an Asian XF but it's close. My understanding was you could order EF, F, M on the original specs. I'm again assuming ExtraFine is an XF. Jim

Nope. I want a shorter pen, as well.

Sorry, I really liked the pictures of the green demo vacuum filler, and longer pens suit me as well. I tend to write unposted, even with my shorter pens. I'm assuming that the request for shortness means when posted. YT

The changes I would like to see are

1. make it easier to post the cap... the current pen does not post well at all and is very unbalanced when posted

2. offer a xxf nib

3. a slightly thinner and lighter pen.... the pen is nice, but my wife and daughter both say it is on the heavy side, even unposted.

I haven't held one, but assuming it doesn't detract from comfort I can't see going to a smooth body being a good idea. The faceted body are what give the pen visual interest and hence an identity. I'm not a marketing guy but I think there's some sort of product positioning decision to be made as to whether the pen is to be reminiscent of Pelikans or an outright Pelikan clone.

Twist out nibs of course.

Some one is going to have to throw up some drawings, before I understand the question enough to give an answer.

I want a lighter and smaller pen with slightly more springy nibs from XXF to B. Something that looks classy.

The only changes I'd like to see are that the cap and end cap be faceted like the barrel. I'd also like a higher quality nib with more size options especially a stub and an XXF.

I like the length, girth and weight of the pen. If it were thinner, lighter, or shorter I would not buy it.

Perhaps you could do a mini-TWSBI Diamond instead of changing the dimensions of the current model?

Since I almost never post my pens, I have no problem with the 530 as it exists now. Uncapped and un-posted, the weight (for me) is fine. And I like the substantial cap. Very well-made.

In the future, should a new design be made that is a non-demonstrator, I think fully faceted might be interesting. The world is full of smooth-barrelled, smooth-capped pens.

I would like to see a greater variety of nibs, of the bolder persuasion...and maybe a stub or two. For both the existing 530 and any future designs.

+1 -- i'm looking forward to the vacumatic version, and is it possible to have Jowo nibs (or at least the pen is capable of taking a jowo nib)?

I just got my 530 yesterday, and apart from the cap sliding down the blind cap more completely (and for me that's not a big deal at all), I wouldn't change a thing. The faceted body is very nice, but I think a faceted cap would be twee.

Yes! The world is full of smooth-barreled, smooth-capped pens! I voted for the smooth-barreled, faceted blind cap and cap version, just as the vac-filler prototype drawings that Speedy posted some time ago show. But a fully faceted version would be fine as well.

About a cap that posts: a postable cap requires other design changes as well. As someone who only posts P-51s and the smallest of pens, I don't need a postable cap and would encourage Speedy not to make that a design priority. And I like the size of the 530 very much, so I hope the next pen doesn't get much smaller--or bigger, for that matter!

The 530 is a great pen. I am carrying it to work every day now, as one of the pens in my three pen wrap (and then there's the pen in my pocket and the Pelikan Go that is my "emergency" pen, always in my bag...) and I really like the stiff but smooth nib on all office paper--it just works!

I very much appreciate the faceted body, as it has tremendous function. This being a reasonably economically-priced pen, I am not overly afraid to set it on my desk somewhat haphazardly, and greatly appreciate the assurance that it will not roll. Other faceted pens (of which I am aware) are significantly more expensive, and I would be overly cautious with them anyway, thus deminishing the import of the faceted functionality. Moreover, I really am amazed by the feeling of quality and strength of this pen, part of this I am sure is attributable to being able to "feel" the heft of the plastic due to the facets. I do not get this feeling with smaller Pelikans, for example (and actually feel the opposite - they "feel" cheaper and more fragile).

Keep it up!

Brian

I thought that the facets would bother me, that I'd be able to feel them in the palm of my hand as I wrote. But that is not the case, and I'm beginning to become attached to them.

Still, I voted, smooth/smooth, but it isn't something that is that important to me after experiencing the feel of the 530. The weight in the cap, that so much of that weight is in the very end of the cap, and that the cap posts so 'shallowly', all this effecting the balance of the pen when it is posted is much more of an issue for me.

While it might change the look of the pen, I'd vote for lighter 'hardware' on the cap and a cap that slid down farther on the body of the pen when it is posted. Even adding a bit of weight to the body or section of the pen might shift the balance point of the posted pen to make the posted pen more comfortable to write with. (Maybe a 'sport' model with less/lighter metal in the cap?)

Still enjoy the 530 very much though.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
