On behalf of the Arkansas Pen Club

THANK YOU!!!

to the show sponsors, all vendors and guests who attended the show and Arkansas Pen Club members who volunteered at the 2011 Arkansas Pen & Watch Show for making this show a huge success. Attendance and the volume of business that took place exceeded our expectations by far. To summarize the results in one sentence: This pen show put Arkansas in the pen map!

Thanks to Fern for all the huge amount of work he did before and during the pen show. Thanks to "carguy" for getting us the location at very competitive rates. At our next pen club meeting in April, we will start making plans for the 2012 Arkansas Pen Show.

On a personal basis, I did a very good amount of business even though I was not at my table most of the time and even more when knowing I was so consummed as an organizer of the show that I neglected to get set up as nicely as I wished I had been able to. I did not have time to even put prices in my pens, did not bring all my pen inventory, etc. Despite all this, I sold a bunch of pens. Better still, I did find some treasures that are going to stay in my collection for a while. They are:

Waterman 72 & 75 eyedroppers in near mint condition

Wahl Eversharp Tulip in Black & Pearl celluloid, standard size and in fantastic condition .... I am a big fan of those tulip/military clips in Wahl pens

Mabie Todd Swan with the lizzard pattern, magenta colors. Acquired one standard and one oversize.

Two Parker Lucky Curve eyedroppers from around year 1900. One of them has its original box and in mint condition.

Out of all pens I have sold or traded over the years, I have always regreted parting with three of them. This past weekend I was able to buy two of those back: A Parker Jack Knife Safety 24 and a Diamond Point in Turquoise and Bronze celluloid with domed ends from the 1930s (same color as the Waterman Patrician Turquoise) :cloud9:

I acquired two sizable lots of Waterman and Conklin pens, and a bunch of pens with flexible nibs. I have already started restoring them, fine tunning them for ideal ink flow, and they will be made available for sale in my website. I start uploading these pens today.

For me, the best part of the show was to get to visit with vendors, get to know some of them on a personal basis, get to make a lot of new pen friends .... and to see lots folks having all kinds of pen fun during the show. Those happy faces and smiles leave very fond memories in my mind.

I will add a few more pictures of my traesure finds and of the show some time later :happyberet:

I think that that picture of Wendi [Esterbex] is just so good! It's just a shame that I didn't think to take some pictures of her myself, but I was a bit preoccupied with demonstrating during the show! But I could kick myself for not doing so!

I'm kicking myself for not bringing my camera to take a couple shots of you working to share with my students at school. I think they would have gotten a kick out of seeing that, and the finished product. Very cool stuff. Oh, and I looked up tithe barns. ;)

I hate I didn't get a pic of you, Shawn....I think I was a bit tired and just not thinking by the time I realized who you were....You are adorable!

Sue, thought so too....

I guess. She sure was a trip man! Lots of fun talking to her and John. They bought me dinner for driving them across the river since they didn't have a ride. Got to play with lots of pens before the food came out which was lots of fun. I mean, when was I going to play with a couple of Pilot Custom 823s and Pelikan 800s? And they told me one simple thing that has helped me with grinding stubs and cursive italics. Make it a box first! And they told me stories about Binder and Nathan Tardiff and other pen people that I hadn't heard of yet. It was all very entertaining. I think they were a bit surprised with how much I know about pens (the repairing part, not the history part :D) and I had a good time talking about home made tools and stuff like that.

I was really wanting to get a picture of the three of you together, "the 3 Musketeers" ... Nola (USMCMom), Wendi (Esterbex), and Shawn (watch_art), but forgot Shawn would only come to the show on Saturday.

I am getting pictures from other visitors who attended the show. Hope to get at least one picture of you at the show, Shawn. In the meantime, here's a picture of you in action at one of our last Arkansas Pen Club meetings. I am still amazed at your sketching and drwaing skills, not to mention at your unconventional ways of repairing pens!

And here is watch_art, displaying his artistic skills to all of us!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
