Just to illustrate how many Montblanc counterfeits are out there on eBay, here are just a dozen of the fake Meisterstuck rollerballs and fountain pens successfully sold just in the last week.

thanks for pointing those out, but it would really help if you told us why they are fake I am in no way disputing what you are saying I just like to understand a bit more on how to recognise fakes.

Btw would love your opinion on the mb being sold by seller ch*****789 on ebay., he seemed to just got his hands on a whole lot of montblancs (yeh right).

The other question I have is has anyone seen a fake le grand or 149 FP with a piston converter? I am not aware they exist but perhaps someone has seen it in their travels. I assume any fake would have a std converter, look at these ones being sold on fleabay by ch*****789...

Very curious. A few weeks back I saw a different seller from Thailand 'sara_wut_958765' that had good feedback on what were mostly low value 'penny auctions'. Then they seemed to suddenly come across a significant supply of high value vintage pens. I watched some auctions curious to see what the feedback would be. I see now that seller id is no longer a registered user and the auctions are no longer in the system. Phew... glad I missed that one!

I like to try to guess if they are fakes.. but when you get a hell of a lot of vintage higher end pens it gets a little suspicious... but just came back from chiang mai about a month ago and noticed that they have fakes in the le grand size... when i was in phuket and bangkok a couple of years back most of the fakes where in classique sizes not the le grand.

I hope for whoever is bidding on those, they are indeed real pens.

Even if the pictures are of real pens of any make, will anything even get sent?

The listing has been removed. I wonder if someone reported it to eBay, and they actually did something about it, or the seller got cold feet.

Can someone look at this one and see if it is a fake. My grandfather gave me the same pen when I was little and lost it in a house accident. I want to bid on the pen, but after reading this not so sure.

jonakimusic, the seller with this listing (a very striking Montblanc 132), is one of the better on eBay, in my opinion. This pen may sell for quite a bit.

I have been fortunate to aquire one pen from him, and the pens he sells are usually in very good to excellent condition, while his photos and descriptions are way above average.

Examine the photos and make sure it is the pen you want. The nib has some condition issues.

I trust him one hundred percent.

He is also a very attentive communicator. Contact him with any concerns.

Good Luck!

Greg

+1

Work it out. Risk assessment. Good looking pictures - but is that enough? It only means that good looking pictures exist, somewhere.

But, rbraunberger , I think jonakimusic is bona fide (Written without personal experience of buying, but having previously communicated with jonakimusic)

Good advice from the above members. It's important to know enough about the item to determine if it's worth the price. The 132-139 pens are hot items and demanding serious dollars.

Three things are a must when buying on eBay.

1.Check feedback and read the individual comments. (Click on seller's name, then "Read All")

2.Make sure shipping with a tracking number, is described and reasonable.

3.Check for the method of payment. I prefer PayPal for convenience and security.

The photos and description have already been mentioned, but they should properly represent the item you may be buying.

Best of luck with the 132.

Very good luck. And very deep pockets, too.

I think this is a quality pen from a quality seller and will go for serious money (as karmakoda predicts)

Fingers crossed. CS

All good points on being cautious on the *bay. I can vouch also for jonakmusic...good transactions here.

On the other hand...

The pen itself.. (speaking on this #132 starting with post #32 in this thread)

Is it me, or is this NOT a great example of a #132...I mean the paint has entirely worn away on the inside of the celluloid barrel. You can see the remanants of the ink view strips near the section. For me..I would pass...AND I NEED A #132 for my collection.

I contacted this zero rated seller with some advice. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230496028067&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I asked them to tell me what the spindle looked like when they screwed out the filler knob (I explained it in very basic terms). They came back to me and said that it looked like gold. So, I thought - maybe they have the pen? Maybe a guess? I then gave them lots of info, after they gave a convincing yarn about their position. They still haven't changed anything - brass filler knob will be post 90's etc. They are either exceedingly thick by not heeding advice that could triple the price or they are getting cold feet as they go further down the road of deceipt! Whichever - there is no way I would buy from them.

I noticed the 'Cameleon'(?) sellers MB's - people are buying them because at £150 they are such bargains - they just hope eBay is managed better than let crooks sell fakes... You do need to be careful. In saying that I just bought a rather nice MB 149 with what looks like a stub from the blown up photos, I think it's okay... Yeah it's fine.

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.

I have a feeling(from the cap, esp. cap jewel size) that the pen is a 146, not a 149. The picture is not clear enoough to arrive at a firm conclusion.

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
