G'Day from Down Under

Nipu

Recommended Posts

After much deliberation about the cheesiness of the above greeting, I decided that we never get to say it in real life here in Sydney, so why not perpetuate the cliche online?

Anyway, I would like to say a shy hello to everyone in the FPN, whose posts I have been reading over the last few weeks with a frightening obsessiveness that is rivalled only by my love of fountain pens, inks and moleskines. I did not realise that there was a whole WORLD of people out there who make my stationery fixation feel normal...

Its so hard to find enthusisatic fountain pen shops in Australia - and we dont seem to get as much stock either - so reading all your posts and discovering Pendemonium has been fantastic!

Thankyou for letting me join!

Nipu eh!

Shouldn't it be Sheila if you say g'day.

This site should confirm your relative sanity

whilst increasing your knowledge.

Which Sydney team do you support then?Oval ball obviously!

Hello Nipu,

Welcome to therapy, here on FPN normality has a whole different meaning, here pen/ink/stationery obsessiveness is just good social behaviour.

A suitably off the wall sense of humour can help,( think Monty Python/Goon Show/Fawlty Towers and such like although there are many people who inhabit this place who are possibly too young to have seen the team first time round and one or two who even missed the re-runs) See MT saga in Chatter. B) :D

If you don't love pens and writing passionately but only have a liking for them, you are welcome, stick around that will change.

For years I thought that I was in a minority of one in collecting pens but then I realised that someone was getting to the various antique stores and other hunting grounds before I was, I still don't know who it was. Then I happened across FPN, I feel much better now, therapy works. :roflmho:

One word of advice, League is not a sport in Yorkshire, its a religion, careful what you say.

Enjoy yourself and once again welcome, John

Hello and welcome aboard! Glad you're here, and no reason to be shy! Just throw any misgivings out the window and dive right in - you're among friends/fellow addicts/enablers here! ;) :P Hope to see you around!

Welcome to FPN. Visited your part of the world almost 40 years ago. Visited Brisbane and the folks there were very friendly indeed. Trip was courtesy of the U.S. Navy. Hardly seems that long ago.

Thank you so much for making me feel so welcome! This is such a great online community! I think one of the really amazing things I have found as I am reading more and more posts and finding out more about FP collecting, looking at other sites as well, is what a creative and intelligent group of people the FP community is.

My scribbles in my moleskines seem pretty bland compared to some of the amazing work out there.

Its very nice to hear from so many people from across the globe.FPs don't seem to be very popular here in Australia in the wider community, so I am particularly excited to hear from some fellow Aussies. I always felt a little out of the loop when I was looking at all those ink vial swap things going on ( shipping and postage to Oz is a little bit pricey )- but hey, maybe we could start a southern hemisphere round?

Having said that, my ink collection is pathetically small. However, I have been using some "recipes" for colours for years, including an almost exact copy of Noodler's Tianenmen (waterman's red with a drop of black) I just had no idea until recently that anyone else on the planet might remotely be interested!!!

I also need to work out how to get a little picture and a signature sorted...

Welcome, Nipu. I am another very recent newbie and am all too familiar with that "frightening obsessiveness" about FPN posts, not to mention a long-term stationery/notebook addiction. It's good to meet kindred spirits!

  • 3 weeks later...

:) hi everyone

hi playpen,

I have actually been trying to create an avatar, but to be frank, I hove no idea how to... i tried uploading a photo from my computer but obviously it is far too large in size... and I am too technologically inept to work it out

any help is always appreciated

BTW I think all of you should know that I have now bought more ink, fountain pens and dip pens than I have ever bought in my entire life just in the past couple of weeks...AND I am starting to have recurring dreams about a Visconti Van Gogh....now THAT is disturbing...

First of all, welcome, and don't worry, I dream about my pens all the time.. papers, too. Dreaming about it actually helps me sort out which ones to buy later! :D

hi hana

i should tell you that I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of a set of nibs and a dip pen from pendemonium, and it was all after I saw your review of Noodler's Army Green - I have no hope of creating the kind of art you did, but I was inspired after seeing your writing to have a little fun with flex!!

Isn't Pendemonium great? I need to buy more J. Herbin inks from them soon.. Poussiere de Lune looks too elegant to resist! I kind of want Bouquet d'Antan, too, but pink is a hard color to work with, especially when using needlepoint nibs.. And you flatter me, but thank you very much.

ummm

a gillott's 907 ( because the website said "exceptionally flexy"!) and a play around selection of the "deluxe nibs"

I am actually on my annual leave at the moment and I can hardly wait for this stuff and my new inks to arrive because I wont have much time when I get back to work!

If the whole "flexperiment" (I know I know I couldnt resist ) is not a total disaster, maybe I will scan/photograph in a pic?

"Flexperiment"--haha, please do! You could do fabulous ink reviews with so many nibs! If you aren't sure of what colors to buy, you could participate in the KCat System or purchase 4 sample vials for a small fee at Pear Tree Pen Company. (I don't know how much it'd be for shipment to Australia, though; maybe other Australian residents on this forum could point you in a better direction?)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
