A couple of sketches from my Monday Morning Sketch Group meeting. The sketches are all from 20 minute poses. The first sketch was done with a Kaweco Sport with a blue cartridge on cream paper, the other two were done on gray toned paper with a Sheaffer Balance and Robert Oster Chocolate ink.

OOO I love it too.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Wow, your work is beautiful! And I am a big fan of your handwriting. Wish I had such skill with a flex pen.

Many thanks!
Ability is acquired. 2 months of exercise for 5-10 minutes a day will make your handwriting very neat (with fine pen of course:)).

Sorry guys, currently I’m sketching so much, I can’t keep up with the uploads.

So I better get a fresh start.

Sometimes I get asked what I usually haul around for sketching.

I recently filled my third sketchbook this year and I thought it would be a nice idea to sketch what I use most of the time on the last two pages of it.

How meta!.

Also I made it a one-liner.

Here you have it:

My Manhattan Portage from Massdrop with.

1. Pentel Aquash in large.

2. uni kuru toga 0.5 mechanical pencil with 2B leads.

3. Lamy AL-Star (EF) with platinum rose red pigment ink.

4. Signo uni-ball broad white gel pen.

5. Lamy AL-Star (EF) with Sailor kiwa guro pigment ink.

6. Mono eraser.

7. prima Marketing tropicals water color plus 8 additional colors from different brands. White gouache for adding a bit more oumph from time to time.

8. lately a Kaweco AL-Sport raw in fine with kiwa guro.

9. dab paper.

10. at least one sketchbook.

Sometimes I throw a second pen case in the mix with a few more pens and that’s about it.

Go sketching, have fun.

Also I made two new videos

PARKER QUINK INK BLACK

This is for a show later this month featuring a wide range of artists and mediums all attempting to interpret the word 'SKY'. I've used Parker Quink ink, fully utilising its' chromatography. Highlights created with bleach. I used a Bockingford rough watercolour paper and particularly like the textural contrast between sea and sky. Quink isn't regarded as a great black for handwriting but it certainly has a great tonal and colour range for painting. The show is at the Halpern Gallery, Chatham, starting on 17th May 2018 until 23rd May. If you want to attend the private view on the 17th, 6-8pm, please get in touch and I can put on the guest list. This measures 650mm x 350mm and is A1 framed with double white mounts and a white wood frame. It's for sale too!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..
    • A Smug Dill
Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
