@[member='Andrew_L']: I love your sketches, especially the way in which you show depth and light. Would you by any chance have any tips or suggestions on how to improve?

Here is the latest one from me.

Paper: Mindoro Traveler’s Notebook

Pen: Guider Zimbo Ebonite
Nib: Schmidt Fine (ground to F-M)
Ink: Private Reserve Chocolate Brown

Hi! Thanks, but I'm not professional painter:)

In theory:

- the foreground(or main plan) should be more detailed (worked)

- the main object always must be

- the main object has more details, all the lights and shadows are present

- always use rule of the "golden section" (Leonardo da Vinci)

- the farther objects are lighter it is

Regards.

You are welcome! :)

The best ink drawing guide(on my opinion) is a Arthur Guptill book: "Rendering in Pen and Ink"

I have 1st, 4th and 6th editions - they are is great!

That book has been on my wishlist for a while on Amazon. I guess it is time now to get it.

Yep! This is 100%. It's time to make yourself a gift for Christmas or New Year! The first edition is very good, but I understand that it is some expensive.

The hard cover edition is not available in India and it is expensive to get it from outside India. The only book that is available on Amazon India (link), does not say which edition it is.

I don't know where to put this. So, I put it here. The art of... uhm display models.

I recently got some education about 3D printers and we got encouraged to print a model from the internet or our own making. As I constructed a model of the Lamy Safari this year I took the opportunity to print it. For this print I cut the model open so one could see the inner workings of this pen. It got printed in powder which is stabilized with resin. Then I added a stand out of PLA filament so the brittle pen can't roll away.

The pen got printed at 150% so one could see more detail.

Out of the printer before cleaning and hardening:

Hardened pen models:

I satisfied with this first attempt.

Greetings the all with upcoming holidays! I wish to everyone is understanding, support of others, execution of plans and an exciting hobby! Hobby - it is like a muse for artists and poets, if you have nothing "liked to" in the life, consider that you do not live! Wish you love in the widest sense of the word, from very close to you to universal!

Happy new year everyone.

Remember that our struggles, challenges, and dreams don't end with one year and begin anew with another. They're there everyday of our life, supporting us, testing us, pushing us towards new goals.

Don't make resolutions on January 1st, make them every single day. Whether big or small, live out those resolutions day by day.

That's lovely Nick, as usualy. I got your mixing set for Christmas and I'm enjoying exploring them. Berber Blue is also a pleasant ink on its own for writing with.

What do you tend to use for black? Was it applied before or after the wash? I'm trying line and wash (with both your inks and watercolours) and I often get black bleeding. Even Platinum carbon black can bleed if it's not totally dry. I'd forgotten that Higgins Eternal isn't waterproof, to my cost. Kuretake sumi ink is waterproof, apparently, but the timeframe for it to actually dry enough to apply a wash over it is, apparently, about 100 years. I prefer fountain pen or dip ink for line quality - I find pigment liners a bit boring, although they are at least more consistently waterproof.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
