Cross Ion

I was told by an assistant at a UK airport Pen Shop that the very useful little Cross Ion was no longer in production. Can anyone in the UK or the USA confirm this sinister little whisper?

This post may well be considered heretical because the Ion is not a fountain pen but it is a very useful travelling pen and certainly solves the writing problem when flying.

I was really jazzed about the ion until I saw how much the price of refills was. I wonder if in the arc of sales of this pen that people started realizing this and it took a hit that the accounte dept. couldn't stand.

Isn't the cost comparable to other refills, about $4? The other refills tend to be long and slender, while the Ion refill looks short and fat.

I guess when you look at a regular gel pen at maybe $1.05 the $4 seems rather high

A bit of a scratchy rollerball if you ask me. My Uniball 1.0 Jetstream by Mitsubishi pencil is a super lubricated gelball (if you can call it that), and it practically races along like a greased bowling ball, and it's all for less than £2.

They are no longer listed on the Cross web site, so I guess the nasty little rumour may be true! However, there are still a ton of them listed on eBay and elsewhere on the web. Better stock up now!

The pen may be mightier than the sword...

but don't take your favorite fountain pen to a sword fight!

Have now checked the Cross-Ireland.com site and it's still

there.

I am looking for a Gel Pen to replace my fountain pen

when travelling. With all the restriction these days I would

like to leave the FPs at home.

I use Moleskine for my writing and heard Gel Pens are ideal for those.

Can anyone with experience share those?

regards

Marcus

Hi,

yes, Ion pen is no longer in production but I guess u can still get them in the stores before they are sold out! Anyway, Cross has since come up with a new pen useful for travelling, called the Autocross. It's also a small sized pen but has a more quality look (wrapped by leather), with 5 colors for us to choose from. Happy buying~

Any ideas which colors these are? I know the Saffron yellow went away a while ago, I was considering getting one of those to use as a highlighter... But other than that I only really care if they still make the black(ish) one... I'm on my second and if it ever dies I'd like to be able to get a third!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
