Who owns an ST Dupont fountain pen? As I guess most folk know I think ST Dupont has a history of making consistently reliable fountain pens where they have paid attention to even the most mundane detail. They are consistently as close to perfection as can be found in the market.

 

So who else has some, what do you have and why do you like ST Dupont pens?

their newest creation scares me off, the defi,a $300 pen equipped with a stainless steel nib? keep in mind the pilot VP comes with a 18ct nib at 1/3 of the price

I'm a little hot potato right meow

"no they are not making littler ponies, they are EMBRACING"

I opened a box of cheerios and planted them. I thought they were doughnut seeds. They didn't sprout :( (joke of the week)

I have four: 1 Olympio and 3 Orpheos with plans to purchase the Andy Warhol model. Love the way nibs glide on paper, even the worst paper is smooooooth! and the workmanship is of the highest quality! They are magnificently crafted!

What's the difference if it's gold or steel? More than half the time it's rhodium coated and the gold never touches the paper anyway--tipping material does.

Have you tried a Defi ye?

 

 

What's the difference if it's gold or steel? More than half the time it's rhodium coated and the gold never touches the paper anyway--tipping material does.

 

no I haven't tried a Defi, I just think ST dupont's aren't the best bang for the buck (yes, I know they're luxury items)

 

at that price point, most people would expect a pen to be equipped with a gold nib

They do. Fortunately there are pens out there for everyone, at any price.

 

But there is a misconception that Gold is "Better" than steel. It's often more expensive, but that is not "better".

 

In many ways steel can actually be a better material for a nib than steel, for example it can be tempered for greater spring response.

 

In addition, what actually touches the paper, what we all write with, is the tipping material and the care that went into finishing it.

 

When you get a chance, fondle an ST Dupont. You may not like it, we all have individual tastes, but I think you'll begin to understand what so many see in them.

Seems to be. A few years back ST Dupont changed their US Distribution setup from Colibri to the current distributor and also closed a bunch of the dealerships. I think he is liquidating some of that inventory. There is also a seller "dcar" that I think is doing the same with some of the west coast inventory.

Well, it is large. The person who sold it to me (KMLST Moorthi) called it Tortoiseshell rather than Marbled, but I don't know Dupont model names and colors like I do Targas so I can't say for sure what Dupont called it. It came to me without box or papers.

I gotta admit I have seen it called both, Tortoiseshell and Marbled. I think it's one of the prettier finishes; maybe we can set a standard and call it Brown Ronce. :bunny01:

 

The large size Montparnasse is about the same length capped as the large (standard) sized Olympio/Orpheo.

I do completly agree with JAR on qualty construção and materials.

Dupont is on of the best quality pen makers in the market.

 

And for the record, I have 3 at the moment

- D-Link Platinum 18k M 18k Nib

- Fidelio Blue laque M. 18k Nib

- Olympio XL Lacquer/Gold Med. 18kNib

Just one - the large black Orpheo... It is as JAR suggested, crafted exceptionally well... In fact, I liked it so much, I purchased two extra sections - as such, I have the original stub, (two tone nib), a medium made into a CI by R. Binder, and a fine... Again, it is a fantastic pen... Shocking how few of them I have seen in the wild...

I have a purple diamondhead, which I only own because I got it at a steal of a price ($200).

 

I love it, it's a great writer, but most Dupont pens seem to miss my sense of aesthetics, sadly.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
