Five Montblanc 149s for sale

Hi all,

It is time to rearrange my collection a little more. Like my Hemingway sale a month or so back, I likely will not sell all of these pens but I would like to sell several of them. Besides one Hemingway all of my pens are now 149s but I have a few too many of them. Here are the ones for sale:

1. 149 75th Anniversary Limited Edition - still sealed - M nib - $2250

2. 149 Obama "Yes We Can" - never used - BB nib - $1100

3. 2010 149 with rhodium plating - never used - EF nib - $850

4. 2010 149 with rhodium plating - never used - B nib - $850

5. Solid platinum 149 - used - B nib - $11,500

All prices include priority shipping and insurance in the US. International shipments will be credited $20 with the buyer paying any extra shipping cost.

1. 149 75th Anniversary Limited Edition - still sealed - M nib - $2250

This is my favorite 149. I have three of them. I bought this one as part of a larger set of 149s knowing I would resell it. It is still factory sealed so there is not much to say.

2. 149 Obama "Yes We Can" - never used - BB nib - $1100

This is one of the 100 YesWeCan Obama 149 pens. I had its nib swapped to a BB nib. It has never been inked. It comes with all paperwork:

I have to admit that the BB nib just looks too large for my comfort. B nibs seem to be my limit. Here are the nib shots:

3. 2010 149 with rhodium plating - never used - EF nib - $850

4. 2010 149 with rhodium plating - never used - B nib - $850

I just bought both of these pens a couple months ago. I found an expert that rhodium-plated them so all the gold parts are now rhodium plated.

http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu82/multiechelon/PlatinumTrim149/Platinum149s_01.jpg

They look beautiful. These would have made it into my rotation except I bought a bunch of other 149s that I like more. The person that did the work sourced brand new 149s and rhodium plated them. So these are 2010 149s that are unused.

5. Solid platinum 149 - used - B nib - $11,500

There is a thread on this pen over the in MB forum.

And a brief writing sample:

http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu82/multiechelon/Platinum149/Platinum149_11.jpg

Of course this pen is outrageously expensive, but I have sold some similarly expensive pens (like a Skeleton 333). This is the most expensive non-LE MB sells. The list price is something like $24,000. It is stunning in person. In the link, I describe all its specifications but it is a special pen. The main reason I am willing to sell it is really kushbaby's fault. I have become a convert to 149 pen stands and while this pen is absolutely a 149 it does not fit in a 149 stand. So I find myself using my pens in stands and leaving this one unused. If someone wants to rob a bank, this pen can be their pen. It comes only with the box and the pen. There is no other documentation.

As a final comment, I have bought and sold many pens here on FPN and ebay. I think I am well known to be conservative in my descriptions and thorough in my packaging. If the pen does not match my description or your expectations for some reason, I will gladly refund your purchase.

Paypal is my preferred form of payment.

Thanks for looking,

Sean

As high priestess of the broad nibbed cult mentioned in the writing sample above AND as an owner of a lovely pen formerly owned by the seller, I can endorse any larger nibs he's acquired and used. Pens come delightfully and carefully wrapped.

I lust after the BB nib, but can't afford the Obama premium, so someone please buy it and put me out of my misery. :puddle:

Thanks everyone for the kind words. As people that follow the MB forum may know, I have pared down my collection to a collection of 149s plus one Hemingway. Since I write with my pens, I thought I could get that set down to five pens for my home office, but I am standing at a dozen. That is why I am trying to sell some here.

I have received a few questions about the rhodium-plated pens. There is a longer thread on these exact rhodium-plated pens in the MB forum. Just follow this link to read it. The short story is that a fountain pen master craftsperson rhodium-plated these two 149s. They are beautiful. The rhodium is thick and the work was done on brand new 149s. The rhodium-plated 149s come just with the pens. No boxes are included. For 2010 standard issue 149s, I don't view boxes or paperwork as a requirement. Since they are rhodium plated, it is not like you would ever send them to MB for service at some later point in time. You would use someone from FPN. But as of right now, the pens are perfectly mint and unused so they are ready to go.

In regards to the solid platinum 149, I of course realize that pen will take some time to sell. It took me about a year to sell my Skeleton 333. Finding a buyer for a pen that costs as much as a car does not happen overnight. But I will have no problem parting with it. I am a user of my pens and I love using the pen, but if it find a new home that will be great. And if not, it will stay inked and in use.

Thanks for looking.

Beautiful pens. I'm still deciding ......

The MB 149 75th anniversary that was dipped but never used that sold for under $800US is a steal though compared to the one you have sealed. Beautiful pens. The question re: sending to service was more insurance in the event 'if I dropped the pen and it split into two, can I send it to MB for a replacement barrel albeit in gold trim for $75US under their usual warranty'.

*edit - I stand corrected, the MB 149 75th anniversary is a LE in this thread; not the SE and is priced accordingly*

In Rotation: MB 146 (EF), Noodler's Ahab bumblebee, Edison Pearl (F), Sailor ProGear (N-MF)

In storage: MB 149 (18k EF), TWSBI 540 (B), ST Dupont Olympio XL (EF), MB Dumas (B stub), Waterman Preface (ST), Edison Pearl (0.5mm CI), Noodler's Ahab clear, Pilot VP (M), Danitrio Densho (F), Aurora Optima (F), Lamy 2000 (F), Visconti Homo Sapiens (stub)

Thanks for your note. I have had a fair number of discussions this weekend but all the pens are currently available.

I am not sure which 149 75th Anniversary you are referring to but it must have been a Special Edition not a Limited Edition. The cheapest I have ever seen a Limited Edition sell for was $1600, and that was without box and papers. Two sealed Limited Editions have recently sold on ebay. One went for $2500 and the other was a little less. I think it was 2400 but I can't find it right now (so it must have been a little longer ago than I remember). $800 is about right for a Special Edition if it has boxes and papers. I think of the SE as usually selling for $850 plus or minus $50 so $800 is a reasonable price.

In terms of your last question, I don't have a good sense as to what MB would do if one submitted one of the rhodium-trim pens for service. I think it is best to assume they would not service it, but I don't think any of us know for certain. At the risk of starting a long discussion on this (which I know is not appropriate for the for-sale forum) I will say that I have sent several MBs in for service that had modified nibs and I have never had a problem. The pens come back just fine. So I think some people strongly believe MB would have an issue in servicing modified pens but I just don't know that for certain. That said, being conservative when buying is always a good idea so I would rather people assume the rhodium-trimmed pens could not be serviced by MB.

Of course it is easy for me to say, but I believe these prices are reasonable. I will drop the prices $25 to see if that generates interest. If not, some will go to ebay and some will go back into the pen case. Here are the new prices:

1. 149 75th Anniversary Limited Edition - still sealed - M nib - $2,225

2. 149 Obama "Yes We Can" - never used - BB nib - $1,075

3. 2010 149 with rhodium plating - never used - EF nib - $825

4. 2010 149 with rhodium plating - never used - B nib - $825

5. Solid platinum 149 - used - B nib - $11,500

For the solid platinum 149, I would gladly entertain trades consisting of demonstrator 149s plus cash.

As always, prices include priority shipping in the US and a $20 credit towards international shipping.

Thanks for looking,

Sean

Hope your sale goes well, Sean. I will never tire of admiring these beautiful fountain pens, especially number 5. What an amazing example of a superior model! Thanks again for the great shots and variations of the 149. Good luck with finding them appreciative new homes.

Thanks Barry. It has been an interesting week. I have been contemplating a deal for the Platinum 149 so I might be parting with that pen sooner than later.

I am dropping the price of the 149 75th LE another $50. If it does not sell at that price, I will list it on ebay and see where it ends up.

1. 149 75th Anniversary Limited Edition - still sealed - M nib - $2,175

2. 149 Obama "Yes We Can" - never used - BB nib - $1,075

3. 2010 149 with rhodium plating - never used - EF nib - $825

4. 2010 149 with rhodium plating - never used - B nib - $825

5. Solid platinum 149 - used - B nib - $11,500

As always, prices include US Priority Mail shipping and a $20 credit towards international shipping cost.

Hi all,

Three of these pens are still available. I think all three prices are fair. An inked 149 Obama YWC without paperwork sold a few weeks back on ebay for >$700. And the other two 149s are absolutely brand new 149s that have been rhodium trimmed; so they are less than the list price of a new 149 yet have been rhodium trimmed. These two 149s only include the pens; they come with no paperwork or boxes.

2. 149 Obama "Yes We Can" - never used (all paperwork and boxes) - BB nib - $1,075

3. 2010 149 with rhodium plating - never used (no paperwork or boxes) - EF nib - $825

4. 2010 149 with rhodium plating - never used (no paperwork or boxes) - B nib - $825

As always, prices include US Priority Mail shipping and a $20 credit towards international shipping cost.

If i receive the paypal payment today or tomorrow morning, I will gladly ship them out on Saturday.

Thanks for looking,

Sean

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o
