Venturing in...

Ann Finley

Recommended Posts

I've been reluctant to join, as I'm not sure I'll have enough time to keep up with another message board--but was sold on the concept of the ink sample swapping.

Guess I've always liked fountain pens...I bought my 1st pen & pencil set, a copper Esterbrook SJ, at age 11 with my birthday money, and then bought a light blue Estie Purse Pen at age 15. I'm still using them.

I began accumulating more pens when I became interested in calligraphy. Later, when I started teaching it, I found myself getting more pens so as to know what to recommend to students. Still, there are far more pens out there than ever I dreamed of! Since finding the online forums & sites about a year and a half ago I've more than doubled the amount of pens I had. Since I use all italic nibs, and my old Osmiroid nibs fit in Esterbrook pens, I find myself buying more of these than others, but I've been trying out other brands, as well.

Trying new inks is a great deal of fun, so I'm going to go now and post my list of what I have to trade--and hope to get to sample some new inks that I'm interested in.

Welcome to FPN Ann! :) Hope you like it around here. I seem to remember your name from one of the other boards. It's great to have you here. Take care!

Ann, did you send a sample to Viv's handwriting compilation? I seem to vividly recall some VERY beautiful writing done by a person named Ann Finley. In fact, after a few months, your sample is one of the only ones that stick around in my head--it was just that dazzling! No wonder you teach calligraphy...

Welcome to FPN, and I hope that you get many an ink vial. :)

Hi Ann,

Welcome to FPN!

I've been reluctant to join, as I'm not sure I'll have enough time to keep up with another message board--but was sold on the concept of the ink sample swapping.

Actually, I think you'll find this board to be a great reprieve from the other one. When things get, let's say, hectic, over there, this is a very soothing and calming place :D, because of the people here, and the marvelous moderating team. I must say I find I am spending more and more time here...

Also, messages don't get lost, and it is very easy as a result to skip threads initially, and go back to them later if they pique your interest. And there is the search facility too.

Regarding the ink sample exchange, aka "the KCat system" :D, I guess I have to put up a list as well...

Kind regards,

Wim

Welcome to FPN Ann. I can't wait to see some of your exemplars (hint hint) in the Penmanship forum.

Glad you're here and hope you enjoy the our little group.

Welcome, Ann!

Anyone who uses her 11th birthday funds to buy a good pen has my eternal respect. I was, at that very age, enticed away into the world of BICs for a while.

You were the child I now, in retrospect, wish I could have been!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
