Greetings from Lake Wobegon

Greetings:

I'm located in a small town by a lake in the middle of Minnesota, and in keeping with the pastoral atmosphere of the place have become fed up with electronic gadgets for recording and storing my miscellaneous information. So, I have reorganized a bit and my current notebooks do not suffer from dead batteries or impact damage. Exposure to the elements hasn't hurt them much either so far.

However, it takes small pages to keep things pocket-size and I have arrived at fountain pens as a means of packing the most writing onto a small space. After trying out pens by Lamy, Duke, Hero and Cross, I'm currently using a Pelikan M200 FP and recently ordered an M800 FP. These pens do a much better job of things than the "Palmer Method" pens I remember from grade school.

The other day I stumbled onto this forum and very much appreciate all the background information on these types of pens. It is a great source of information on this topic.

Good to see you Cliff.

Welcome to our little home away from home. Draw up a chair, a cup of coffee and enjoy.

I expect that you will enjoy frequenting the FPN, and hope that you will be able to add to the body of knowledge here regarding favorite notebooks and information management in a non-electronic environment.

Regards,

Gerry

Welcome, Cliff.

Gerry and Slush didn't warn you, though, so here goes: Fountain Pens are addictive for many people. (Not me, though. I can quit anytime I want. Really.)

And you've already discovered finding the right notebook. Ink is next -- the search for the perfect blue and the perfect brown occupy tons of space on this and other lists.

Hope you have fun here. It's a great community.

Sometimes a technology reaches perfection and further development is just tinkering. The fountain pen is a good example of this.

Hi Cliff

Welcome.

You will be trying out a lot more pens. Once you get used to the feel and colours of celluloid pens, there is no stopping.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
