Did you try your local drug store?

Well, I dont' use a syringe myself, but according to other posts on FPN, if you ask nicely and explain why you want it, they may just give you one. They may at first offer the oral syringes used for babies (no needles), but you want one with a needle--which you can sand down so that it isn't so super-sharp. Run a search here on FPN for "syringe" and see what you come up with.

I actually use a cheap pipette from my college's chem lab. :) Most people will just give you one, since they're worth about seven cents.

I'm actually surprised that the drugstore will sell syringes! My dad was a pharmacist and growing up I got to learn all of the ins and outs of pharmacy.. (I kind of wish that I had chosen it as my field.. But alas I went the way of the computer)

Either the needles or the syringes are considered "prescription-only" products. (likely the needles if people are able to buy the syringes)

I will have to make a short trip to my local pharmacy and see what I can get. :)

FWIW, does anyone have a source for blunt 16g or larger needles? They make filling carts much easier.

As a side note, for "protection" ?! my dad kept a VERY LARGE syringe with a VERY LONG THICK needle in his car between his drivers seat and door. !!! I think he gave some poor auto wash employee a heart attack when he took it out to get the car cleaned. :) Dad had quite the sense of humor.. (I still have some of his empty Quaalude bottles :) .. Great for Jelly Bellies)

I have a nice set of different sized syringes and needles that a doctor friend obtained for me (I use them to blow out easter eggs, and yes, to refill cartridges and some touchy converters). I'd start with any friends you might have in the health care industry. Alternatively, if you are in a metropolitan area, a needle exchange program might be willing to give you one.

Good luck and let us know if you got one!

They were going to give me a syringe that was unsealed. But I wanted one with a needle, so I had to fork over a quarter.

After posting above, I went to the drug store and said I wanted a syringe for a fountain pen. The pharmacist gave me a syringe about two inches long and with a broad bore. It cost $.32.

I stand corrected! I went to my local walgreens. walked up to the pharmacy counter and said "Can I have 3 medium sized syringes with thick gage needles to refill fountain pen converters?" .. She about rolled her eyes :D and promptly brought three out.. Said, "That will be 1.35" and I was outta there. :)

Couldn't have been easier!

If you are at the pharmacy asking to buy a syringe, and you are at all concerned about them thinking you really DON'T want to use it for FP's, ask them first if they have any syringes with DISPENSING needles on them. Those are the really stout needles with the squared off ends. You'd have to REALLY be into some SERIOUS S & M to want to inject anything with one of them.

The beauty about living in San Francisco is that chances are, the pharmacist you are dealing with is into SM themselves. :roflmho:

You can always use a "Monoject 412", which has a curved tip built in. No one would confuse it with a syringe that could be "misused." There is a photo of one somewhere on FPN. Veterinarians and dentists use them and are a good source. (Mine were free from the veterinarian.)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
