Pelikan M400 Tortoise

DrOzzie: I must admit I'm sorely disappointed in your review. Really, a review that features the less-approachable translation of The Illiad? The Fagles translation is superior in all respects. :)

All my Pelikan's have a gold nib. Just luck, no planning.

I have a 400 tortoise, 1984-96, 14 K M, just a few cut lines and the pelikan stamp on the nib,

my 120 F is just a gold nib with stamp, no lines; my 140 has sort of stamped lines and stamp. The 605 has a fancy nib, not as fancy as say a 1000 but good. (do not have an 800-1000...yet)

That 450 tortoise that I saw posted here on another post has a most gorgeous nib.

I have fallen for tortoise. I saw some one's collection of them, and a few others.

I always seem to have a couple of Pelikan's inked.

I am not sure that Pelikan has raised it's prices. It could well be that the dollar has fallen.

Wait a couple of months and order from Europe direct to get cheaper prices. Greece, is bankrupt, Portugal is next, and Spain is falling. With that the Euro will drop big time and the Dollar will raise in comparison.

The reason why I say order directly from Europe is the States side dealers having bought it more expensively, can not afford to sell it at the conversion rate that is coming.

The price of the pen will remain the same in Germany, but with a stronger dollar it will be cheaper for you to buy.

They're beautiful pens. I bought one about a decade ago and still use it today. It's one of my favorites. Great review Dr. Ozzie.

I bought one of these pens from Origimi Ink in Asheville, NC for my husband this past Christmas and he loves it. All the good things said about it here are so true. I liked his so much that I bought myself a Souveran 400 in red with the black pinstripes and an extra fine nib. It couldn't be more perfect! I have J. Herbin's 1670 ink in it and it just glides across the paper...any paper. Gotta love those Pelikan pens.

Nice review, I like most any fountain pen described as "Tortoise".

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
