Cross Affinity Opalescent Black Fountain Pen

I got a Cross Affinity Opalescent Black Fountain Pen while flying out of Singapore just weeks ago. It is a great pen and writing quality was very good. However, I realize one problem. The plastic resin use for the pen is made of very thin materials. Just barely 2 weeks of using it and now I see a crack on the pen cover (near the screw thread area).

I wonder if anyone else has similar experiences. I will be sending it for repair and hopefully can get it replaced without have to pay for too much...

I do not have an Affinity, and I appreciate the warning! Cross repair service has always served me well, and I hope you experience the same.

All the best,

I have had an Affinity (blue) for about 4 months and use it a fair bit. I find it an excellent writer (nail, of course, but none of my pens are flex, and a very smooth nib right out of the box). I have not had any problems with cracking and have been pleased overall. Sorry to hear of your troubles and I hope that Cross makes this right for you.

Thanks for the comments. It is indeed a good pen. I like the smoothness of the ink that flows when writing in every occasions. Only thing is the plastic resin that was used was a bit disappointing. Will be bringing it in for replacement over the next few days.

For years I used the Cross Solo because I liked the feel and the way it handled. However, Cross mercifully put the beast to bed. I assume it was because it always cracked right at the top where the pocket clip was mounted. I have 4 or five of them all with the same problem. Slow learner, huh. Anyway, I noticed that Cross came out with the Affinity. Had an even better feel and the top of the pen where the clip is looked very substantial. I have now used mine for over 4 months and NOW the bottom of the pen near the "nib" is cracked and broken. Sounds like Cross just can't design plastic parts that hold up to ordinary use! I love the feel but sure don't like the engineering!

I really, really want to hate my Cross Affinity Opalescent Black fountain pen. I got it in a big markdown sale, otherwise I would never have bought it. I can't stand that big fat cap, and the way the clip sticks way out really bothers me. I do my best to ignore this pen, leaving it sitting idle in any carelessly tossed position I can fling it for many days at a time, and then I pick it up just for irritation's sake and write a line or two with it, and danged if every single time it doesn't write immediately, and smoothly, and perfectly in every respect! Thanks for giving me another possible reason to hate this pen. I'm gonna look really carefully now every time I force myself to pick it up to see if hopefully it isn't cracked somewhere so I can throw the #$%^&* thing in the trash bin once and for all. ;-)

You can always give it a new home where it will be loved ... donations accepted here. :roflmho:

Well, I hate how it looks, but I love how it writes. The FP nut's dilemma, that's for sure.

God, my pen has the same situation with you. How is your pen now?

FYI: Cross has a conditional Lifetime Warranty in the U.S. Here's a link to the page:

https://www.cross.com/en/help/customer-service/lifetime-warranty?cat_name=warranty

But watch out for the small print!:

Warranty on Sales Outside of the U.S.

For products purchased or used outside of the United States, upon discovery of a defect in the product within the warranty period (one year from date of purchase), please notify your local dealer or distributor. Should you have any questions about this agreement, or if you desire to contact us for any reasons, please use the address above.

However, in my experience outside the U.S. (Singapore & Indonesia), in the case of obvious manufacturing defects Cross stands by their products, even if the pen is out of warranty. It has been more than a few years I've had to deal with them though.

Good Luck, David

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
