FPN website reliability status -- January 2010

Dear FPN Membership,

As many of you may already be aware, the forum suffered a technical problem yesterday afternoon. Without going into the complicated details, it was essentially a database problem that was triggered by a fault in the forum software. We received fantastic help from a veteran admin member of FPN who helps us from time to time, which got us back up and running.

Unfortunately, there are still a few aspects of the website which are not functioning properly. Most notably the Private Conversations, Profile Views, and Search Function are causing a "permissions" error to result. We expect these parts of the forum to be operational soon. Your messages are still there, so please do not panic.

Of course, without being able to send private messages, this creates a challenge to the marketplace. Please use e-mail communication for your activities there until FPN functionality is 100% restored.

We thank you for your patience through this difficult stage. The FPN database system has become quite large and we will be putting practices in place to help ensure much greater reliability.

Sincerely,

The FPN Admin Team

Working tirelessly on our behalf, as always. Much appreciated, guys. Don't know what I'd do without FPN these days...

I just felt part of a global community wondering what to do if we can't be on FPN. Thousands of people world wide at their screens feeling disconnected from thousands of other people! So, what have you all been up to?

I been doing a lot more of those things I mean to do which I don't because I'm reading about other people doing these things: started some letters; practiced some illuminated Celtic letters; cleaned pens (yes, Chris, in the ultrasonic, despite your dire warnings!) and refilled them; started emails to people; made some grid paper with squares large enough to accommodate the B & BB nib & co.

and added the FPN donation site to my address book. [note the procrastination on many of these things]

Thanks to all the Admin people and the 'veteran admin person' for plugging away at the problem. I hope everyone was kind to you, and if they weren't, well, nuf said. karma and all that

I noticed the problem, also that FPN kept plugging along despite it (a couple of tries and a given page would load). The database, or its interface with the rest, must be one of the weaker parts of the software, because when I've walked in on problems before, I got the same sort of database error messages. I wonder whether an IP.Board upgrade to address these problems, and another tempest in a teacup, are in our future?

Regardless, *THANK YOU*, FPN Herculeses!

Thank you for all your effort. I'm really glad I've found this site with such a strong community and great admins/mods to back it up! :cloud9:

I'm sure I join many others here in saying: I'm VERY glad I'm not an admin. I have enough trouble sorting out the computer I'm in the same room with. Good job, folks.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
